A family stand outside the orchestra at Vauxhall Gardens. The stout wife puts a handkerchief round her husband's neck to protect him from the night air. Her daughter holds her fan to her face, flirting with a beau in the middle distance who inspects her through his glass. Musicians play on the first floor. The illustration was published as the frontispiece to the June issue 'The Wit's Magazine', accompanying the 'Humourous Description of a Citizen and his family at Vauxhall' which is transcribed without acknowledgement from the essay of Colman and Thornton in 'The Connoisseur' (May 10, 1755).

A prolific artist, James Ward. R.A (1769-1859) was one of the finest animal, portrait, and landscape painters of Regency England. Brittle, pious, and argumentative, Ward worked well into the mid-19th century, creating dynamic compositions that epitomized Romanticism. He was devoted to the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, and emulated them more than any of his contemporaries.

A letterpess advertising the Velázquez portrait of Prince Charles (later Charles I) that was exhibited at 21 Old Bond Street in London in 1847. John Snare (c.1808-84) was a bookseller and publisher from Reading, England, whose life was transformed by his 1845 discovery of a lost Velázquez painting, which he believed depicted a young Charles Stuart. Thought to have been painted during Charles’ 1623 visit to Spain, the portrait sparked a long legal battle with the Earl of Fife’s estate, leading to Snare’s financial ruin. He later emigrated to New York, where he died in 1884. The painting, last seen in 1885 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has since disappeared, with only Snare’s written accounts remaining.

A view of an iron railway viaduct at Velletri, near Rome, with a locomotive crossing. It was published in 'Le Scienze e le Arti sotto il pontificato di Pio IX' by Paolo Cacchiatelli and Gregorio Cleter, a record of the artistic, architectural, urban planning and scientific enterprises promoted by Pope Pius IX. This viaduct was needed to connect Rome and Velletri by rail. Originally it was planned as a monumental stone bridge, but an English company offered a cast iron bridge that they had built for a client but which had been rejected; it was shipped out and erected, allowing the Pope to open the railway in 1866.
