Very scarce etching with hand colour. Framed, visible area 260 x 335mm (10½ x 13¼").
A sturdy bull dog, its padlocked collar inscribed 'Iohn Bull', mauls a lean dog with the head and collar of Napoleon Bonaparte. The latter lies with his head in profile to the left, mouth wide open, under the paws of John Bull, who savagely bites his back. A copy of
BM Satires 10080, but the BM example has Piercy Roberts's inscription scored through and replaced with Thomas Tegg's.

An oval portrait of Napoleon in relatively-plain uniform, probably celebrating his success as an artillery commander of the republican forces at the siege of Toulon, which led to his promotion to brigadier general aged only 24. As he is unrecognisable it is probably an early portrait, as the publishers seem to think that no one would question the inaccuracy.

Published in Robert Bowyer's 'Triumphs in Europe, in the Campaigns of the Years 1812, 1813, 1814 commemorated by a Series of Twelve Views...', which celebrated (prematurely) the end of the Napoleonic Wars. This work was republished the following year as 'An Illustrated Record of Important Events in the Annals of Europe', and again with an sister publication 'The Campaign of Waterloo' from 1816.

Around the statue are events from Napoleon's life, starting and ending in storm clouds, but his successes shining against a rainbow arching above. The verse is from Casimir Delavigne's 'À Napoléon', part of his 'Les Messéniennes, Livre II' (1835).

In 1812 he was commissioned to paint 36 portraits of Napoleon in his Coronation Robes for the Imperial Courts and had completed 26 by 1814, but the following year Napoleons abdicated for the final time and Girodet came into a considerable inheritance. Thereafter his output decreased.

Full-length portrait of Napoleon, standing, one hand inside his waistcoat, in a landscape, probably St Helena. The artist, Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845), was originally a soldier (he distinguished himself in the defence of Clichy in 1814) before losing his commission upon the restoration of the monarchy and turning to painting. He specialised in Napoleonic scenes, which made him popular with the opposition under the Restoration and influential in the propagation of a mythic view of the Napoleonic era. Engraved by the leading British printmaker S.W. Reynolds, who also worked in Paris.

Henry Bone (1755-1834), was an enamel painter who he moved from Cornwall to London in 1779 where he worked on jewellery designs and the enamelling of watches and fans. He began to exhibit miniatures at the Royal Academy in 1781. He executed many beautiful miniature pieces of much larger size than had been attempted before in England. Among them are copies of eighty-five portraits painted during the time of Queen Elizabeth I that are considered among his greatest works.

A satire on Napoleon Bonaparte's promises to the French after his escape from Elba. He preaches from a high pulpit in a Gothic church, wearing a gown over a military coat and an ill-fitting wig. Marshal Ney fills the Clerk's desk underneath. Hanging from the pulpit are three of Napoleon's former costumes: the uniform of a republican soldier with an imperial cross underneath it; a mitre and bishop's robe supported on a musket and inscribed 'Scarecrow'; and a Mahometan turban and robe, with a bottle inscribed 'Arsenic for the Poor Sick of Jaffa'.

A portrait of Theophile Boneti (1620-89) seated at a desk and surrounded by piles and shelves of books. He holds a quill, suspended above the page, near an ink pot in one hand and an hourglass in the other. A skeleton with a scythe stands at the open door. Published as the frontis piece to his complete works "Sepulchretum" on all known surgical., medical and pharmacological knowledge at the time, published as three volumes.

Belgian dignitaries make obeissance to Napoleon Bonaparte, with plates of offerings of words on their heads. He sits on a throne, using large forks to spear their offerings and bring them to his mouth. On each side stands a Mameluke with crossed arms holding cocked pistol and drawn sabre. A satire on the bombastic addresses given to Napoleon during his tour of the Channel ports in June 1803.

The published state ot this portrait of Lady Ann Bonfoy (1729-1810), unusually still untitled. The daughter of Richard Eliot of Port Eliot, Cornwall, Anne married to a captain in the Royal Navy, Hugh Bonfoy (c1720-1762) in November 1751. They had one daughter together before he died in 1762, also Ann, who married the First Earl of Ely. The elder Ann was Lady of the Bedchamber to the daughters of George III. Reynolds had painted a group portrait of the Eliot family in 1746, before his departure for Italy. This was one of the first of his portrait to be engraved in mezzotint.

Francis de Bonne, Duke of Lesdiguieres (1543-1626), one of the greatest generals of his age. A protestant who came of age during the French Wars of Religion, Lesdiguieres distinguished himself both in France and in the ongoing wars in Italy. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.
