A billhead illustrated with an elevation of the 'Shawl Warehouse'. W.H. Lizars was Edinburgh's most famous engraver: he was employed to engrave the first of Audubon's 'Birds of America', including the Wild Turkey. However, because of a conflict of interest (his working on John Prideaux Selby's series of life-size birds), Audubon dropped him for Havell. However this billhead shows that even the best engravers had to engrave more than bookplates.

A general view, from the north, of Billingsgate Quay and market with stalls. In the foreground there is a crowd of streetsellers and larger retailers. In the 19th century, boats delivered fish to this small inlet of the Thames and business was conducted on the quayside. Published in Ackermann's famous work, the 'Microcosm of London', the figures were drawn by the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin.

View of Billingsgate market from the river. In 1849, the famous London fish market was moved off the streets into its own riverside building, which was demolished c. 1873 and replaced by this arcaded market hall. It was designed by City architect Sir Horace Jones and built by John Mowlem & Co. in 1875. This building, known as Old Billingsgate Market, is now used as a corporate events venue.

Billy Button is a character in Samuel Foote's play of 'The Maid of Bath', first played 26 June 1771, the part being taken by the actor Thomas Weston (1737 - 1777). From 'Caricatures, Macaronies & Characters by sundry ladies gentlemen artists &c.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.2' upper left and '3' upper right.

Here Pope Sung. The above was carved on Popes Beech Tree at Binfield, Berks, by another celebrated Poet Lord Lyttelton when on a Visit at Bill Hill, the seat of the late General Gower.

A broad tree trunk with one single curling branch in a field in Binfield, Berkshire, with scattered trees and a shepherd leaning on his staff to left, his sheep grazing nearby. A tribute to Alexander Pope has been carved into the tree by George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton of Frankley (1709 - 1773). Lyttelton was secretary to Frederick Prince of Wales, and author of many poetical and historical works.
