A Barouche with Ackermann's Patent Moveable Axles.
Drawn by C. Blunt. Engraved by S. Mita[missing].
Published Jany. 1 1820 at R. Ackermann's, 101 Strand, London.
Hand coloured engraving, sheet 145 x 240mm. 5¾ x 9½". Sheet trimmed.
A barouche was a four-wheeled, shallow carriage with two double seats inside, arranged vis-à-vis, so that the sitters on the front seat faced those on the back seat. It had a soft collapsible half-hood folding like a bellows over the back seat and a high outside box seat in front for the driver. It was used principally for leisure driving in the summer. Numbered 'Plate 3, Vol. IX' upper right, for Rudolph Ackermann's 'Repository of Arts' periodical, published from 1809-1829. The formal title of the publication was "Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics", and it discussed and illustrated day to day life, and influenced English taste in fashion, architecture and literature. Ackermann's ingenuity and enterprise were not directed to fine art matters alone. His father had been a coach-builder and harness-maker in Germany and his early years in London were engaged in making designs for many of the principal coach-builders. The preparation of Lord Nelson's funeral car (1805) was entrusted to his skill. Between 1818 and 1820 he was occupied with a patent for movable carriage axles.

[Gloster Mars I, 'Bamel', G-EAXZ.]
[by Cyril Barraud.]
[n.d., 1922.]
Etching. 155 x 105mm (6¼ x 4¼"). Some staining.
Derived from the Nieuport Nighthawk, the Gloster Mars I was a single-seat racing biplane. In 1922 a Mars I made an attempt on the world air speed record. Although the recorded speed of 212.15 mph (342 km/h) was faster than the existing record, it did not exceed it by the required margin, so the record was not recognised. Published 17th June 1782 by C Bretherton [but a later impression?].
Etching on wove paper, 175 x 110mm. 7 x 4¼". A decent impression, with good margins. Faint staining to right side of plate.
Caricature of Isaac Barré (1726 - 1802), full face, standing, his hat in his right hand, his left hand thrust into his waistcoat. Politician and soldier, Barré was born in Dublin to French parents. He entered the army and fought alongside General Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. Entering Parliament in 1761, he gained a fearsome reputation as a scourge of corruption and a champion of the American colonies. His phrase 'Sons of Liberty' became a Patriot slogan during the American War of Independence, 1775-82. He shared John Wilkes's royal enmity and mastery of radical invective; the town of Wilkes-Barré, Pennsylvania, founded 1769, commemorates their friendship. Barré was the subject of Sayers's second important political satire. By James Sayers (1748 - 1823). Sayers's caricatures were so powerful and direct in their purpose that Fox is said to have declared that they did him more harm than all the attacks made on him in parliament or the press. Numbered 'XII' faintly upper left. The publisher Charles Bretherton (c.1760 fl - 1783) was the younger brother of James Bretherton. BM Satires 6066. See BM 6028. NPG D9620.
