Scene from 'le jardinier et son seigner', a one-act comic opera with a libretto by Michel-Jean Sedaine (1719-97), the most important and influential librettist of opéra comique in the late 18th century. Originally put to music by Philibert, in the 19th century Delibes produced a new opera from Sedaine's text. Dedicated to Denis Pierre Jean Papillon de la Ferté (1727-94), connoisseur and administrator of the Menus-Plaisirs du Roi, the organization in the French royal household responsible for designing and presenting weddings, ceremonies, fêtes and funerals.

A record of a 1000-guinea wager: William Douglas, 4th Duke of Queensbury, claimed he could get a carriage 'with four running wheels, and a person in, or upon it, drawn by four horses' to travel nineteen miles in one hour. Backed by Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, the wager was accepted by Theobald Taaffe (described by Horace Walpole as 'a gamester, usurer, adventurer') and Andrew Sprowle. The carriage, specially made by a Mr. Wright of Long Acre, managed to complete the 19 miles around Newmarket Heath in 53 minutes, 27 seconds.

This version has the title changed, Henriette-Félicité Tassaert as painter, and the revolutionary symbols in the borders removed.

A scene of the interior of a spa, with an invalid woman in a bath chair, printed as a writing sheet probably designed for the visitors to the most famous source of Chalybeate waters (also known as ferruginous waters, containing iron salts), Tunbridge Wells. When discovered by Dudley North, 3rd Baron North, in 1606 the chalybeate waters of Tunbridge Wells could cure 'the colic, the melancholy, and the vapours; it made the lean fat, the fat lean; it killed flat worms in the belly, loosened the clammy humours of the body, and dried the over-moist brain'. Famous partakers include Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, Queen Anne when Princess Anne of Denmark and Queen Victoria when princess.

A man seated on a barrel (Joseph Chamberlain) declaims to an audience of yokels, attended by a man with helmet and sword (William Gladstone). A satire on Chamberlain's speeches during the 1884 County Franchise Bill, which would have given the vote to country labourers. After saying that the Conservative leader Lord Salisbury was ''himself the spokesman of a class – a class to which he himself belongs, who toil not neither do they spin'', Stafford Northcote called Chamberlain ''Jack Cade'', after the leader of a popular revolt in 1450.

The phrase was invented by Eli Hamshire, who suggested the ideal landholding for a citizen should be three acres.

Sir William Chambers (1722 - 1796), architect. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Chambers worked initially for the Swedish East India Company, travelling to China where he studied Chinese architecture and decoration. Returning to Europe, he studied architecture in Paris and Italy before moving to London in 1755. Chambers is best remembered for designing and building Somerset House, a project he worked on from 1775 to 1795. This Neoclassical development housed many government offices and provided accommodation for various learned societies, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Society, and the Society of Antiquaries. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy and was its first Professor of Architecture. After George Dance (1741 - 1825).

Anthony Chamier (1725-80), financier and government official. Chamier had no political ambitions, however, and preferred London's literary society: Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds were frequent visitors to his house in Epsom. This mezzotint is taken from one of the three portraits which Reynolds painted of him (painted 1767, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston). This impression formerly in the collection of Martin Erdmann, New York-based banker and collector, particularly of British eighteenth century mezzotints, in which area he acquired 'one of the most remarkable collections known, both for quantity and quality of impressions' (Lugt).

An interior scene showing the first meeting between English explorer Richard Chancellor (d. 1556) and Ivan the Terrible (1530-1584) Tzar of Russia in 1554. Chancellor had set out to find a north-east passage to China, on hearing of Chancellor's arrival Ivan summoned him to Moscow. It was through this and subsequent meetings that a trade was opened between England and Russia.

Satire on the change of Ministry which followed Goderich's resignation, after which the Duke of Wellington was summoned to Windsor by George IV and commissioned to form an administration. Here the King, depicted with a huge gouty foot, hands a wig to Wellington, who declares 'Happy I am to see the Whig discarded- I'll try and Administer something that shall fit your M_ better'. Goderich had been unable to hold together the fragile coalition of Tories and Whigs assembled by his predecessor, Canning, and resigned after only 144 days in office (which was still longer than Canning had managed!)

Partially destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s, the chateau is now owned by the Institut de France, and houses the Musée Condé, which is one of the finest art galleries in the country. Numbered '14' upper right. A copy of the print by Jacques Rigaud (1681 - 1754), in his 'Recueil choisi des plus belles vues des palais, châteaux et maisons royales de Paris et des environs'.
