Portrait of a young girl with a garland in her hair, holding a dove, engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi after Francisco Vieira 'Portuense' (1765-1805). A later state was published as 'Affection. From an Original Drawing in the Possession of John Scott Esq.r', by Deely in 1809. Vieira came to London c.1796 and became Bartolozzi's lodger. After exhibiting at the R.A. in 1798 and 1799 he returned to Oporto, becoming court painter in Lisbon in 1802. At the same time Bartolozzi became director of the National Academy of Lisbon, living there until he died.

In 1818 Nicholson began to publish a series entitled 'Portraits of distinguished living characters of Scotland, drawn and etched by William Nicholson from his portraits and those by other painters', for which this proof probably contributed.

The Tea Tax Tempest, or the Anglo-American Revolution.

Famous American Revolution satire, in which a figure of Time uses a magic lantern to project an allegorical representation of revolution in America, showing the consequences of the Stamp Act and the tax on tea, watched by an audience personifying the four continents. In the title area, two medallions depicting Holland and Switzerland as precursors of the American struggle in their own experiences of oppression. One (left) is inscribed "Auto da fe" and "Holland. 1560". It represents a man tied to the stake, while a monk, holding up a crucifix, holds a torch to the pile. On the right. is "Wilhelm Tell, Switzerland. 1296". Legendary Swiss patriot William Tell aims with a cross-bow at the apple on his son's head, while Austrian bailiff Gessler on horseback points at the child. Between the medallions is part of an oak-tree. The medallion representing Holland is supported (left) by the Dutch lion holding in his paw a sheaf of seven arrows representing the United Provinces. Hercules with his club (right) supports the medallion of Switzerland. An adaptation, in reverse, of 'The Oracle' by John Dixon. Engraved and published in Nuremberg by Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg (1743 - 1790).

The identity of the sitter follows that on the British Museum's impression of the same print.

Barnard compiled and published a catalogue of the collection 'Bibliothecae Regiae Catalogus' between 1820 and 1829 in five folio volumes.

In the published state, the kneeling woman is changed to a nun, her hair hidden by a wimple; the standing woman's is less bushy; the cardinal's robe is darker; and one of the figures in the doorway has a turban.

Eight plates after Pieter Andreas Rysbrack's (1685-1748) series of four paintings showing fish and four paintings showing fowl. The fish are depicted lying haphazardly on tables next to baskets as if ready for preparation or on the market stall while the birds are all shown in landscape settings as if freshly shot, ready to be collected. Each bird is numbered and named in a key below the image. John Boydell reissued the plates in 1760s which had previously been published in 1735 by Richard Hylton.

Portrait; standing three-quarter length, leaning against a column in a landscape, in peer's robes. George Capell-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex (1757-1839) assumed the surname of Coningsby on inheriting the estates of his grandmother, the Countess of Coningsby. He married Sarah, daughter of Henry Bazett, of St Helena in 1786; and married again in 1838 to Catherine, daughter of Edward Stephens, of Leadwell, Oxfordshire.

A proof state of one of the finest 18th century images: a scene of fashionably-dressed people promenading and listening to musicians in Carlton House gardens, under tall leafy trees with no sign of the house. At the centre is George, Prince of Wales, in a tricorn hat and with a lady on each arm. A group of musicians are on the far left, one playing a small trumpet. The Prince of Wales gave the ballad singers breakfast in his garden, where they were all drawn from life on the spot by Bunbury. According to De Vesme and Calabi, Bartolozzi only engraved the faces of the figures.

A three-quarter length portrait of a man wearing wig and long coat with cuffs, leaning on a table on which is a sheet with music and a map of dance steps. Little is known about 'Caveller'; the BM notes: ''Possibly the same as Mr Cavillier, master of the boarding-school in Queen's Square near Ormond street (d.1745). Also possibly the same as the Thomas Caverley alluded to by Thomlinson in his Art of Dancing''.

A representation of Ceres, goddess of agriculture, as a young woman wearing a garland of grain crops being offered crops, a pair of lions and a bull by a group of farmers. This is thought to be one of the 41 plates from the Luti Collection.

Rare etching, working proof from the unfinished plate, laid paper. Image 450 x 650mm (17¾ x 25½"). Trimmed within plate, and to image on three sides. Centrefold crease and nicks to extremities.
An interesting progress proof impression, before the plate was engraved with fine detail. The published state carries the following full title and inscription "TO THE King's most Excellent Majesty, This View of the Royal Dock Yard at CHATHAM. / Is by PERMISSION and with all Humility, Inscribed By His MAJESTY's most dutiful Subject and Servant, / Rich.d Paton. / [far left] Printed by Hocquet. Size of the Picture 4. ft 10. in by 3. ft 4. in / Publish'd by Royal Authority & as the Law directs London Feb.y 14.th 1775. To be had of R. Paton Wardour Street, Soho. " A fine prospect of Chatham dockyard, Kent, bustling with activity: ships on the water, some in in dry-dock on the far shore, a skeleton of a ship being built to the right of them; carpenters and blacksmiths working on the near bank in the foreground. Two men try to drag a pig across a plank over a gully (lower left) to where people are loading food and drink onto a small ship. The busy docks stretch along the river bend witht he infantry barracks and the Commissioner's House centre right. Richard Paton (1717 - 1791) painted five views of the royal dockyards, in the Royal Collection, in all of which the figures were painted by John Hamilton Mortimer. In 1776 he exhibited at the Royal Academy the views of Rochester and of Deptford docks.

Attractive view of the Thames at Chelsea with figures including ferryman on the bank in left foreground, beside a fisherman; another carrying a net over his shoulder to right, boats on the water and upmarket residences on the opposite side of the river. First published by Bowles in 1744, this print is listed in the 1753 Bowles catalogue, p.44, under the title 'Perspective Views in and about London', and is number 13. After John Maurer (fl.1713 - c.1761).

Cremorne Gardens, Lots Road SW10 are named for Thomas Dawson, 1st Viscount Cremorne (1725 - 1813); this portrait is by Charles Knight after Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769 - 1830). Lord Cremorne bought Chelsea Farm, the house depicted below his portrait, in 1778. In 1831 it was purchased by Charles Random De Berenger, Baron De Beaufain who turned it first into a sports club and then opened the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens. Entertainment included concerts, fireworks, balloon ascents and galas. After its closure, the gardens were sold for building and soon built over.

Portrait of of Philip, Earl of Chesterfield (1634 - 1714), three-quarter length seated three-quarter to left, pointing with right hand to a paper on a table next to him, left hand on hip. To the left, a window with a view of a landscape with trees. Proof before letters. Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield was a peer in the peerage of England. He was the son of Henry Stanhope and Katherine Wotton. He inherited the title of Earl of Chesterfield on the death of his grandfather in 1656. Stanhope was educated by Poliander, Professor of Divinity at Leyden (1640) and at the Prince of Orange's College at Breda. He received a DCL in 1669 from Oxford University.

A striking statue of Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC), Roman orator made consul in 63 BC., holding a scroll in his left hand at waist level, another object in his right. Based on one of the ancient Greek and Roman statues from the collection of the Countess of Pomfret, which formerly belonged to the Earl of Arundel before later being passed to the University of Oxford. By Thomas Worlidge (1700 - 1766).
