A young girl kneels to hug a long-haired St Bernard dog in the corridor of Batersea Dogs Home. This was published the year that Queen Victoria became the first royal patron of the home, a tradition that has continued.

Three of Queen Victoria's dogs: Noble, a Cheviot-breed collie, lying on a divan; Waldmann, a dachshund; and Corran, a Skye terrier. After Gourlay Steell (1819-94), animal painter dubbed the 'Scottish Landseer' who received many aristocratic commissions for his work. In 1872 he succeeded Edwin Landseer as Queen Victoria's Animal Painter. This portrait was probably painted at Balmoral.

The original painting is Winterhalter Catalogue, no 162.

An adapted copy in reverse of Edwin Landseer's 1820 painting of two St Bernard dogs standing over and protecting a traveller lying beneath a pile of snow, the hospice in the background. In this version the traveller's head is buried and there is no monk behind. This famous scene encouraged the myth that the dogs carried small casks of brandy on their collars.

A dog arrives at the door of a an Alpine hospice, an exhausted child, rescued from an avalanche by the animal, clinging to its back. The story is recounted in two lines of text below the title. The 'Hospice du mont Saint-Bernard', a traveller's hospice on the often treacherous St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Switzerland and Italy, is the origin of the name of the St. Bernard breed of dog, a working dog from the Swiss Alps, originally bred for rescue.
