Half-length portrait of Joseph Banks (1743-1820) the famed naturalist and botanist, who found fame after an expedition to Labrador and Newfoundland and after accompanying James Cook on his first voyage around the Pacific. Banks held the position of President of The Royal Society for 41 and advised on the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Banks is depicted wearing his star of the Order of the Bath, his hand resting on a book titled 'The Royal Society'.

On the right is the Thames Tunnel: the portrait was painted c.1835, half-way through its construction. This mezzotint was published in 1846, three years after the tunnel was opened to the public. By this time Brunel's career was over, having been almost totally paralysed on his right side by a stroke in 1845.

A great-granddaughter of Charles II and daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Lennox, she married Charles Bunbury in 1762, shortly after which he commissioned this portrait. The marriage was not successful, and she was soon involved in affairs, becoming pregnant by her cousin Lord William Gordon.

Mustafa Fevzi Çakmak (1876-1950) was a Turkish soldier, politician, Minister of War of the Ottoman Empire, National Defence Minister, and Prime Minister of the Ankara Government, the second Chief of the General Staff of the Army of the Grand National Assembly, and the first Chief of the General Staff of the Republic of Turkey. He was present as an Ottoman military official in the Albanian Uprising, Balkan Wars, First World War, War of Independence, Sheikh Said Rebellion, Ararat Rebellion, Dersim Rebellion and the Italo-Turkish War.

Portrait of James Carmichael-Smyth (1779-1838), army officer and colonial governor. After briefly acting as colonial secretary following the surrender of the Cape of Good Hope, Carmichael served at Coruna, and in Scotland and the Netherlands (including the defence against the 1815 French invasion. On Wellington's recommendation he was made a baronet in 1823, and published several books on military and colonial subjects. In 1829 he was appointed governor of the Bahamas,during which time he abolished the flogging of female slaves. In 1833 he was transferred to the 'more important' governorship of British Guiana, in which he position he was still serving when he died suddenly 'of brain fever' in 1838.

A portrait of Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Baron Collingwood (1748 - 1810) standing on board a ship, wearing a naval uniform with epaulettes and medals, one suspended from a ribbon around his neck. He is holding the hilt of a sword with his left hand, lettered with '[Eng]land expects evry man to do his duty'. A naval battle is seen in the background. Collingwood was notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories of the Napoleonic Wars, and frequently as Nelson's successor in commands. He died in Menorca and was buried next to Nelson in St. Pauls.

Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) the most famous of all English seafarers, large globe in left background. This print has an interesting history: the plate was started during Drake's lifetime, hence the date of 1580 on the print (the artist is widely believed to be Jodocus Hondius although Remigius Hogenburg has also been suggested). The plate was left unfinished (an example of the print in its unfinished state is in the British Museum, registration no. O,8.86) until in the 18th century the printmaker and antiquary George Vertue purchased the plate from Drake's descendants and completed it. Drake earned his fame and fortune through his skilful seamanship and outstandindingly successful piracy. His circumnavigation of the globe from 1577-81 involved a number of very profitable raids on Spanish ships and ports. His increasingly frequent and serious attacks during the 1580s were an important factor contributing to Philip II's decision to launch the Armada against English in 1588. Drake served as vice-admiral of the English fleet which defeated the Armada.

George Eden, Earl of Auckland (1784-1849), politician and governor-general of India 1837-40. In later years Auckland served as first lord of the Admiralty, and is credited with reforming the Admiralty during this period and enabling it to effectively conduct the Crimean War a few years later. This large portrait was published shortly after Auckland's death. Auckland, New Zealand was named after him.

A portrait of British statesman and diplomat William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland (1745 - 1814). Three-quarter length, sitting, directed and looking towards the left, holding a paper in his left hand. Beside him is a table with an inkwell on it. The Auckland Islands group to the south of New Zealand are named after Eden. A whaling vessel, 'Ocean', rediscovered the islands in 1806, finding them uninhabited. Captain Abraham Bristow named them 'Lord Auckland's' in honour of his father's friend William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland. In 1771 Auckland published 'Principles of Penal Law', and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions.

William Eden (1744 - 1814), 1st Baron Auckland, English statesman; educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1768. In 1771 he published Principles of Penal Law, and soon became a recognized authority on commercial and economic questions. In 1772 he took up an appointment as an under-Secretary of State. He represented New Woodstock in the parliaments of 1774 and 1780, and Heytesbury in those of 1784 and 1790. In 1776 he became a commissioner on the Board of Trade and Plantations. In 1778 he carried an Act for the improvement of the treatment of prisoners, and accompanied the earl of Carlisle as a commissioner to North America on an unsuccessful mission to settle certain disputes with certain colonists there. On his return in 1779 he published his widely-read Four Letters to the Earl of Carlisle, and in 1780 became Chief Secretary for Ireland. He gained election to the Irish House of Commons as the member for Dungannon and became a member of the Irish Privy Council. While in Ireland he established the National Bank. In 1840 Gov. Hobson selected and named the site of Auckland after him, now the capital of New Zealand. For a short period it was called Bishop's Auckland.

He returned to England where he was knighted and appointed professor of anatomy. His right hand is holding an anatomical model.

John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent (1735-1823). As commander in chief in the Mediterranean he blockaded the French at Toulon (1795) before defeating the Spanish off the Coast of St. Vincent in 1797. Jervis later served as the first Lord of the Admiralty (1801-4) where he instigated reform in the administration of the navy. A globe and volumes on the table with a painting of a sea battle on the wall behind.

An interior scene of domesticity at Orleans House, Twickenham, featuring at its centre the house's most famous resident Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orleans (1773 - 1850). Forced into exile from France in the period leading up to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Louis Philippe made this house his home in London between 1815 and 1817. Attracted to the tranquillity of the area he wrote to a friend: 'I bless heaven, noon and night that I am in my peaceful house in old Twick'. In 1844 he returned to England as King of the French, and visited his former residence accompanied by Queen Victoria. The pupils are portraits of his children.

Portrait of Charles William Henry Montagu-Scott (1772-1819), fourth Duke of Buccleugh and sixth Duke of Queensberry, K.T., as a young boy, stroking an owl. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he served as MP for Marlborough, Ludgershall and Mitchell before entering the House of Lords as Baron Scott of Tyndale in 1807. A member of Marylebone Cricket Club, he made four known appearances in first-class cricket matches in 1797.

James Paine (1717-89), the British architect, with his son James Paine (1745-1829) the British sculptor and architect. James Paine Senior was an architect of considerable practice and published plates of Mansion House at Doncaster, 1751. He edited volumes of "Vitruvius Britannicus," and published two large volumes on "Mansions" in 1783. In 1785 he was appointed High Sheriff of Surrey.

Floris van Pallandt (1537-98), Count of Culemborg & Count of Kuilenburg. The 'Compromise of Nobles' of 1566, a covenant petitioning Margaret of Parma, Regent of the Habsburg Netherlands, to moderate the placards against heresy, was agreed at his house. He was condemned by the Council of Troubles (a tribunal instituted to publish the ringleaders of the religious conflict), forcing him into exile.

A portrait of politician and military commander Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess Hastings (1754-1826) who was a commander during the American and the French Revolutions and served as Governor General of India between 1813-1823. Rawdon-Hastings is shown in his uniform, with his arm resting on a sword, behind him ranks of troops charge into battle. He requested his right arm be buried with his wife.

(Paul) Julius de Reuter, Baron de Reuter (née Israel Beer Josaphat) (1816-1899), founder of Reuter's News Agency. Reuter moved to London on October 29, 1845, he set up an office at the London Stock Exchange, and established a telegraph link between Britain and the European continent through the English Channel. This link was extended to the south-western shore of Ireland, at Cork in 1863 where ships coming from America threw canisters containing news into the sea. The news was telegraphed to London, arriving before the ships. He was created Baron in 1871.

A full-length portrait of George Bridges Rodney (1719 - 1792), first Baron Rodney, naval officer and politician, famous for his victories against the Spanish off Cape St. Vincent in 1780, relieving Gibraltar, and against the French at the Battle of the Saintes in the Caribbean in 1782. The Hon. Thomas Harley commissioned Gainsborough to paint this portrait (now Earl of Rosebery collection, Dalmeny) to commemmorate the Battle of the Saintes. It was engraved by the artist's nephew Gainsborough Dupont.

Engraving after Rembrandt's 1654 painting 'The Standard Bearer', believed to be a portrait of the collector Floris Soop (1604-1657). The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is one of numerous engravings made after Rembrandt by William Pether (c.1738-1821), mezzotint engraver and painter, best remembered as the engraver of prints after Rembrandt and Joseph Wright of Derby. These prints stand amongst the finest mezzotints ever produced in Britain, demonstrating how mezzotint was the printed medium which most effectively reproduced the chiaroscuro effects of these painters.

King William IV (1765-1837) when a prince. Prince William was sent into the Royal Navy at the age of thirteen, 'chiefly to prevent him from falling under the influence of his eldest brother, George' (Oxford DNB). He joined the (ironically named) 98-gun ship 'Prince George' in 1779 as a midshipman, an event commemorated here. After a portrait (c.1781) by Benjamin West, the American artist later to become President of the Royal Academy. The print was made by Francesco Bartolozzi and Paul Sandby, both printmakers with strong connections to the Hanoverian monarchy.

The two daughters of Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl Hardwicke, and his wife, Jemima, Countess De Grey and Baroness of Crudwell. The two children stand in a garden beside a sphinx on a pedestal, Lady Amabel Grey on the left with a dove perched on her right hand, and Lady Mary Jemima running towards her holding another dove, a poodle at her heels. The children grew up to become: Amabel Hume-Campbell, Countess de Grey (1751-1833), the political writer and amateur artist; and Mary Jemima Robinson, known as Lady Grantham (1757-1830), mother of Prime Minister Viscount Goderich.
