Portrait of James Carmichael-Smyth (1779-1838), army officer and colonial governor. After briefly acting as colonial secretary following the surrender of the Cape of Good Hope, Carmichael served at Coruna, and in Scotland and the Netherlands (including the defence against the 1815 French invasion. On Wellington's recommendation he was made a baronet in 1823, and published several books on military and colonial subjects. In 1829 he was appointed governor of the Bahamas,during which time he abolished the flogging of female slaves. In 1833 he was transferred to the 'more important' governorship of British Guiana, in which he position he was still serving when he died suddenly 'of brain fever' in 1838.

Frederick II of Prussia sits on a bench, having been defeated at Nimburg in the battle of Kollin. He is surrounded by his generals and three children wrestling in the foreground. A church and other buildings from the city can be seen in the background. The Battle of Kolín on 18 June 1757 saw 44,000 Austrians under Count von Daun defeat 32,000 Prussians under Frederick the Great during the Seven Years' War. The Prussians lost the battle and nearly 14,000 men, the Austrians lost 8,000 men. Friedrich II was a brilliant military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe.

Frederick the Great at Lissa after the battle of Leuthen, after Schubert. A night scene depicting, on the right, the Prussian king lifting his hat and greeting a group of men gathered on the left. In the Battle of Leuthen or Lissa, fought on 5 December 1757, Frederick II used maneuver and terrain to decisively defeat a much bigger Austrian army under Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine, thus ensuring Prussian control of Silesia during the Seven Years' War. Friedrich II was a brilliant military campaigner who, in a series of diplomatic stratagems and wars against Austria and other powers, greatly enlarged Prussia's territories and made Prussia the foremost military power in Europe.

Four plates from 'Military Evolutions', a scarce set of 30 aquatints of the Allied cavalry during the French Revolutionary Wars. Engraved after designs by Conrad Gessner (1764-1826), Swiss artis in London from 1796 to 1804, exhibiting at the RA while mostly living on the estate of his Scottish patron (many paintings from this period remain in English and Scottish private collections).

A Highland infantryman with musket and bayonet, in a melée around a destroyed Russian cannon. The Battle of Inkerman (November 5, 1854, part of the Crimean War), is known as the 'Soldiers' Battle' because foggy conditions meant that co-ordinated tactics were impossible so the soldiers had to use their own initiative. Victor Adam (1801-66), painter and lithographer. H.T. Cooke & Sons were a mid-19th century book publishers and print sellers.

A working proof impression by Theodore Falkeysen of Benjamin West's most celebrated painting, 'The Death of General Wolfe', 1770 (Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada), which represents the death of the British General James Wolfe at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec in 1759 during the Seven Years' War. A portrait of politician and military commander Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess Hastings (1754-1826) who was a commander during the American and the French Revolutions and served as Governor General of India between 1813-1823. Rawdon-Hastings is shown in his uniform, with his arm resting on a sword, behind him ranks of troops charge into battle. He requested his right arm be buried with his wife.
