Full-length portrait of William Charles Baldwin. (1826-1903), frontispiece to his 'African Hunting: from Natal to the Zambezi' (1863). In 1851 Baldwin sailed for South Africa, taking seven deerhounds. He hunted mainly mounted on horseback, but found the deerhounds little use, so used local dogs, He claimed to be the second white man to set eyes on the Victoria Falls in 1860. He returned to England in 1861.

A full-length portrait of Henry Callender, Captain General of the Royal Blackheath Golf Club, wearing the ‘Field Marshal's' uniform of the club. The two golf clubs illustrated are said to be still in the possession of the Royal Blackheath Golf Club. This painting, by the famous portrait artist Lemuel Francis F Abbott (c.1760-1803) is one of the most famous golfing images.

A fireworks display held on January 28th 1635 in the town square of Ghent, including a monster head breathing fire. held to celebrate Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (c.1610-41, brother of Philip IV of Spain) becoming Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. He watches from the balcony of the Saint Bavo Church. One of 42 plates in 'Serenissime Fernandi Cardinalis Infantis triumphalis introitus in Flandriae metropolim Gandauum'.

Engraving, 18th century watermark. Sheet 280 x 460mm (11 x 18"). Trimmed to plate on three sides and into plate at bottom, losing part of publication line, damage in title repaired, bottom right corner replaced, folds flattened, creasing.
A view of a bowling green surrounded by hedges and woodland, with a man fishing in the water watched by promenaders. The famous Pleasure Grounds at Gobions, in North Mymms, were created by Charles Bridgeman for Sir Jeremy Sambrooke, 5th Baronet (d.1754), with money earned in the East India Company by his ancestors. Daniel Defoe called Gobions 'one of the most remarkable curiosities in England'. Queen Caroline visited in 1732. One of the earliest images of bowls.

A view of the formal pleasure garden at Nancy. In the foreground a game of 'Pallone col bracciale' is being played: the players have a 'bracciale' (a wooden cylinder), on their forearms to hit a 'pallone' (inflated ball, the origin of the English word 'balloon'). In the middle, holding the pallone, is the 'mandarino', a server who plays no other part of the game.
