Very rare pen lithograph, sheet 285 x 205mm (11¼ x 8"). Laid on backing sheet with aquatint borders, tear in backing sheet taped.
A separately issued early lithograph from 'Specimens of Polyautography'. by Thomas Barker (1769-1847) Barker was born in Wales but was known as "Barker of Bath", after the city he moved to as a young man. As an expert on fresco technique, Barker advised on the redecoration of the Houses of Parliament in 1841. He also published 'Forty Lithographic Impressions From Drawings by Thomas Barker, Selected from His Studies of Rustic Figures After Nature' (1813), the first one-man collection of lithographs ever printed in England. Many of the stones, still bearing Barker's original drawings, are in the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.

Three elderly men sit at a table examining a map by candlelight. On the walls are two plans of the fortifications of cities. An ink text on verso reads ''Drawn & Etch'd by Miss Fanshaw & given by her to Mrs Scott August 1796''. In pencil on front margin composed and elected by Miss Catherine Fanshawe and given to her by Lady Polworth. Catherine Maria Fanshawe (1765-1834) was best known for her poetry, including the 'Riddle on the Letter H', which was originally mistakenly ascribed to Lord Byron.

Young Lavinia, dressed in a dress and bonnet, converses with her mother in a barn; both hold rakes. Emma Crewe (active 1787 - 1818) was a gifted amateur artist who, along with Diana Beauclerk (1734-1808) and Elizabeth Templetown (1747-1823), contributed designs in 'Romantic style' to Josiah Wedgewood for reproduction in his studio in Rome.
