Rare etching, platemark 160 x 250mm (6¼ x 9¾").
Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool. The hotelier and sports promoter William Lynn (1792-1870), who had leased the Waterloo Hotel in Aintree in 1820, leased the racecourse in 1829 (probably as a way of attracting customers to his hotel), erected a grandstand, and was soon organizing three meetings a year. By the time this print was published, however, the artistocracy had become involved. Lynn's name had been removed from the card (he was declared bankrupt in 1844), and the 'Grand National' (which some consider to have begun in the 1830s) was officially adopted in 1847 for the national racing event at the course.
