Michel Adanson (1727-1806), French naturalist of Scottish descent. In 1748, funded by the director of the Compagnie des Indes, he left France on an exploring expedition to Senegal. He spent five years there, collecting and describing numerous animals and plants. In 1759 he was elected a member of the Academy of Science and in 1763 he published his 'Familles naturelles des plantes'.

Anne watches the naked Guillot by a stream; verses by Moraine below discussing the morality of the act. Engraving after a design by Charles Eisen (1720-78), painter, draughtsman and illustrator. It was through his drawings, engraved to illustrate nearly 400 books, that Eisen's reputation was chiefly established. These included editions of Lucretius, Ovid, Tacitus, Virgil, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Erasmus and La Fontaine.

Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) the naturalist, botanist and explorer who was patron of science and President of the Royal Society, 1778-1820. He sailed with Captain Cook to the Pacific on his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, 1768-71, and compiled a unique natural history collection. He held a position of great influence in the scientific world and he advised on ventures such as the Kew Botanic Gardens and the first British colonies in Australia.

Charles Louis Berthollet (1748-1822), the Savoyard-French chemist who later became vice president of the French Senate in 1804. He is known for his contributions to theory of chemical equilibria via the mechanism of reverse chemical reactions, and for his contribution to modern chemical nomenclature. He was also the first to demonstrate the bleaching action of chlorine gas, and the first to develop a solution of sodium hypochlorite as a modern bleaching agent.

Charles-Francois Brisseau de Mirbel (1776-1854) the French botanist and politician. He was a founder of the science of plant cytology. In 1802, he published his treatise 'Traite d'anatomie et de physiologie vegetale', which established his position as a founder, also, of plant histology and plant physiology in France. He obtained the post of superintendent of the gardens of Napoleon's Chateau de Malmaison, and in 1808 he joined the French Academy of Sciences to then become the chair of the botany department of the Sorbonne.

Cordierite, a magnesium iron aluminium cycloscilicate, is named after him.

He is remembered for two laws related to gases, and for his work on alcohol-water mixtures, which led to the degrees he used to measure alcoholic beverages in many countries. Gay-Lussac's Law of 1802, states that if the mass and pressure of a gas are held constanty then gas volume increases linearly as the temperature rises.

Portrait of the 'father of modern chemistry', who was also administrator of the 'ferme génerale', which during the ancien regime collected duties on behalf of the king. He was guillotined in 1794. Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794) was a French nobleman prominent in the histories of chemistry and biology. He stated the first version of the law of conservation of mass, recognized and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783), abolished the phlogiston theory, helped construct the metric system, wrote the first extensive list of elements, and helped to reform chemical nomenclature. He was an investor and administrator of the "Ferme Générale" a private tax collection company; chairman of the board of the Discount Bank (later the Banque de France); and a powerful member of a number of other aristocratic administrative councils. All of these political and economic activities enabled him to fund his scientific research. At the height of the French Revolution he was accused by Jean-Paul Marat of selling watered-down tobacco, and of other crimes, and was guillotined.

Louis Lefevre-Gineau (1751-1829) the French chemist and scientist. He began his work with Lavoisier and studied the chemical composition of water with him. He was a member of the commission charged to define the metric system and it is he who determined the mass of the kilogram. He was a Knight of Ainelle under Napoleon's Empire in 1808.

Sir John Leslie (1766-1832) the Scottish mathematician and physicist best remembered for his research into heat. He gave the first modern account of capillary action in 1802 and froze water using an air-pump in 1810, the first artificial production of ice. He invented the Leslie Cube in 1804 which was a device used in the measurement of demonstration of the variations in energy radiating from different surfaces.

René Primevère Lesson (1794-1849), French surgeon, naturalist, ornithologist, and herpetologist. In 1816 he served as pharmacist and botanist on Duperrey's round-the-world voyage of La Coquille (1822-25), and he was responsible for collecting natural history specimens with surgeon Prosper Garnot and officer Dumont d'Urville. He was the first naturalist to see live birds of paradise in the Moluccas and New Guinea. He received the Legion d'honneur in 1847.

Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein (1780-1857) the German physician, explorer, botanist, zoologist and herpetologist. Between 1802 and 1806 he travelled in southern Africa, and was appointed personal physician to the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. In 1810 he published 'Reisen im sudlichen Afrika'. which gained the position of Professor of Zoology at the University of Berlin a year later, and 1813 he was appointed director of the Berlin Zoological Museum. He was responsible for the creation of Berlin's Zoological Gardens in 1841.

Etienne-Louis Malus (1775-1812) the French officer, engineer, physicist and mathematician. He was particularly interested with the study of light, and he studied geometic systems called ray systems, closely related to Julius Plucker's line geometry. His discovery of the polarization of light by reflection was published in 1809, and his theory of double refraction of light in crystals, in 1810. He is remembered for Malus' Law which gives the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. His names is one of the 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.

A half-length portrait of Michel Ney (1769-1815) a military commander in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars, one of 18 men to be made Marshal by Napoleon. With the restoration of the Monarchy in 1815, Ney was tried and executed by firing squad though he refused to be blindfolded and gave the command himself.

Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811) the German zoologist and botanist who worked in Russia. In 1767 he was invited by Catherine II of Russia to become professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and from 1768 to 1774 he led an expedition to central Russian provinces, collecting natural history specimens. He settled in St. Petersburg, becoming a favourite of Catherine II and teaching natural history to the Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine. She gave him a large estate at Simferopol, where he lived until the death of his second wife. He was then granted permission to leave Russia by Emperor Alexander and he returned to Berlin.

Thomas Pennant (1726-1798) the Welsh naturalist, traveller, writer and antiquarian. He wrote acclaimed books including 'British Zoology', the 'History of Quadrupeds., 'Arctic Zoology' and 'Indian Zoology', although he never travelled further afield than continental Europe. His first scientific papers focused on his own experiences, geological subjects and palaeontology. One of these so impressed Carl Linnaeus, that in 1757, he put Pennant's name forward and he was duly elected a member of Royal Swedish Society of Sciences.

Marc-Auguste Pictet (1752-1825) the Swiss physicist, chemist, meteorologist and astronomer. He was one of the eight founding members of the Geneva Society of Physics and Natural History. He served as director of the Geneva Observatory for around 30 years, and as such oversaw the installation of a meteorological station on Great St. Bernard mountain in the Alps. His work in astronomy was recognised by having a crater on the Moon, Pictet, named after him.

An allegorical monument to British naval commander Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650-1707) who saw action in the Third Anglo-Dutch War and the War of Spanish Succession. From Eugene Mac-Swiny's 'Tombeaux des Princes, Grand Capitaines et Autres Hommes Illustres, Qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne'. Owen McSwiny, former manager of Drury Lane and the Haymarket Theatres, had travelled to Italy where he bought works of Italian painters, including Canaletto, to sell to English collectors. He also planned a series of historical pictures to decorate the Duke of Richmond's apartment at Goodwood, commemorating the deeds of famous Englishmen.

Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) the French chemist. He attended the lectures of Antoine Francois Fourcroy and Nicolas Louis Vauquelin (ref: 29636) and was allowed into Vaquelin's laboratory. In 1821 he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His first original paper in 1799 was on the compounds of arsenic and antimony with oxygen and sulphur. In 1807 he began research into ethers and in 1818 he discovered hydrogen peroxide. In 1799 he also developed the pigment known as Thenard's blue in response to a request by Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal for a cheap colouring matter. He is one of the 72 names incribed on the Eiffel Tower.

Nicolas Louis Vauquelin (1763-1829) the French pharmacist and chemist. In 1798 he discovered beryllium by extracting it from an emerald and reducing the beryllium chloride with potassium in a platinum crucible. A year prior to this he had discovered chromium in a red lead ore from Siberia. In 1806 he isolated the amino acid asparagine from asparagus, and also discovered pectin and malic acid in apples, and isolated camphoric acid and quinic acid. In 1809 he was made professor at the University of Paris.
