Oval portrait of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (AD 12-41), after Titian. Nephew and adopted grandson of emperor Tiberius, he was nicknamed Caligula (Little Boots) by his father Germanicus's troops. Apparently his reign started well but when he became authoritarian and cruel he was assassinated. The 'Encyclopedia Londonensis' was published from 1796 to 1829, compiled by John Wilkes, edited by John Jones.

Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844) Painter, student of John Hoppner although he focused on Landscapes. John Linnel was an English painter who made a good living as a fashionable portraitist, but preferred to paint landscapes. In 1837, he married the daughter of Samuel Palmer, one of his influences. He gave up portraiture in the 1840’s and moved to Redhill to devote his career to his landscapes. These paintings were highly desired and caused Linnel to amass a great deal of wealth. However, he was not favored among his colleagues and was denied membership to the Royal Academy.

A view of Callendar House in Falkirk, with an artist's impression of how the Union Canal was going to affect the aesthetics of the estate. The Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal was a contour canal (running at the same level, with viaducts to cross valleys, so avoiding the use of locks), and the original plan had it running around a hill overlooking the house. The owner, William Forbes, a merchant who specialised in Royal Navy contracts, made an objection, forcing the company to built a 696-yard tunnel through Prospect Hill to the west.

This painting, by the famous portrait artist Lemuel Francis F Abbott (c.1760-1803) is one of the most famous golfing images.

A half-length portrait of Callirhoe, a protagonist from Chariton's novel of the same name, set in 400 BC Syracuse, in which the supernaturally beautiful Callirhoe marries Chaereas. However, Chaereas' jealousy causes a chain of unfortunate events leading to years of separation. Evidence of Chariton's novel only appears in a 13th Century manuscript and the story was not published until the 18th Century.

Satire on young Whig supporters and their supposedly republican tendencies. A scene outside the Golden Eagle in Suffolk Street, near Charing Cross, with a mob around a bonfire. In the windows above are seven young gentlemen, one holding a calf's head and another, who is masked, brandishing an axe. The original Calve's Head Club was said to be a republican secret society meeting in the 1690s. A dinner of young aristocrats was held on 30 January 1735, aping the earlier club, led to disorder when the mob found out what was occuring.

French author Etienne Calvel, made by Edme Quénedey (1756 - 1830), a miniature painter and engraver, who made much use of the physionotrace. This was a mechanised drawing instrument that could reproduce the outline profile of a portrait. It was invented by Gilles-Louis Chretien, who engraved Quenedey's portraits from 1787 to 1789, in 1786. Chretien and Quenedey founded a very successful portrait studio in Paris together in 1788. Between 1786 - c.1810 there were only two studios in Paris which produced a relatively small number of physionotrace engravings. Consequently very few of these intriguing portraits are preserved today. Because of their origins and the realism physionotrace portraits have, they can be seen as true photo-graphic objects and are therefore classified as a forerunner of photography.

Frederick Calvert was born February 6, 1731 in Epsom, Surrey, England. He was the son of Charles and Mary Jansen Calvert, and was Maryland's sixth and last Lord Baltimore. Frederick's father, Charles Calvert, fifth Lord Baltimore, died on April 24, 1751. Frederick had two sisters, Louisa and Caroline. Upon his father's death, Frederick inherited the proprietorship of Maryland, making him the sixth Lord Baltimore, and immense wealth and considerable political connections. His wealth included an income of about ten thousand pounds sterling a month, derived from collected rents and taxes, large shares of stock of the Bank of England, and his resident estate at Woodcote Park, in Surrey. It was through this wealth that enabled Frederick to live a life of high style and leisure.

Jean (John) Calvin (1509 - 1564), theologian of the French reformation, in an oval frame, with full beard and wearing cap and fur-lined coat. Calvin was a tireless polemic and apologetic writer who generated much controversy. He also exchanged cordial and supportive letters with many reformers, including Philipp Melanchthon and Heinrich Bullinger. In addition to the Institutes, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible, as well as theological treatises and confessional documents. He regularly preached sermons throughout the week in Geneva. Calvin was influenced by the Augustinian tradition, which led him to expound the doctrine of predestination and the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation. Calvin's writing and preachings provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. The Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as a chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. A scene on a shoreline, with Calypso and her nymphs (some dancing) greet Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, and his tutor Mentor, who have left a floundering ship. This is an impression of a plate left unfinished by Woollett at his death in 1785. An ink inscription also credits John Elmes (1762-1808), Woollett's apprentice. Alexander (Dictionary of British & Irish Engravers) writes that the plate was finally completed forty years later, by Middiman and J.H. Robinson.
