Printer at Exeter (1692 - 1773). His major work, begun in 1746 and finished in 1757, was the 'Grand Gazetteer, or Topographic Dictionary', published in 1759. He also printed: a weekly newspaper from 1715 until his death; William Hals's 'History of Cornwall; and 'John Vowell's Account of the City of Exeter'. When he retired he was the oldest master printer in England; when he died he was the oldest freemason in England, celebrated by three hundred masons escorting his coffin to the grave on 14 November.

This issue was a printed black border around the image with vignettes of the cards in each player's hand and the titles in white. The painter and illustrator Lance Thackeray (d.1916) is best known for his comic sporting illustration art, especially billiards and golf, and his humorous postcards. He was also an author, of 'The Light Side of Egypt' and 'The People of Egypt'. Set of four chromolithographs on india laid paper, with vignettes of playing cards in the margin and etched remarques lower left. Images 291 x 410mm, sheets 475 x 608mm. Unfaded impressions, full sheets, with occasional spotting, on board.
A fine example of one of the most highly regarded sets of bridge prints. A young couple, clergyman and retired army officer are around the table, and, with the exception of the last, these same characters feature in a charming sub-narrative in the remarques. The painter and illustrator Lance Thackeray (d.1916) is best known for his comic sporting illustration art, especially billiards and golf, and his humorous postcards. He was also an author, of 'The Light Side of Egypt' and 'The People of Egypt'. Amateur lithograph made during a trip to continental Europe by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859). In December 1819 he was returned as an MP for Cambridge in an election controlled by the Duke of Rutland, owner of Belvoir, and he made several lithographs of Belvoir castle. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced). A full length portrait of William Bridle, gaoler of Ilchester Bastille, shown within the prison holding leg irons, manacles and a hangman's noose. Radical activist Henry Hunt was imprisioned for his role in a rally in Manchester which came to be known as the Peterloo Masscare, he served his term in Ilchester Prison and whilst there brought a case against the gaoler William Bridle for drunkeness, gambling, neglect of duty, licentiousness towards female prisoners and torture. Bridle was found guilty and removed. This portrait is the frontispeice to 'Investigation at Ilchester Gaol in the county of Somerset into the conduct of William Bridle the Gaoler, before the commissioner appointed by the crown' published in 1821.

An early town plan of Brielle (Del Briel) in the Netherlands, orientated with north to the bottom of the map, published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first systematic atlas of townplans. The title celebrates the capture of the port on 1 April 1572 by a fleet of Dutch nobles rebelling against Spanish rule in the Netherlands. It proved to be a turning point in fortunes of the Low Countries in the Eighty Years' War.

Edward Bright, a grocer from Maldon, Essex, famed for his corpulence. Amongst other men of the 18th century also famous for their weight, Bright, at 42 stone, far exceeded John Love of Weymouth (d.1793, 26 stone) but was still far from the weight of the most famous, Daniel Lambert of Leicester (1770-1809, 52¾ stone). An American contemporary, Miles Darden, outweighed even Lambert at 71 stone. The text to this print describes how in 1750 two men bet on whether five adult men could fit into Bright's waistcoat without damaging it. A related print published by Bowles (BM Satires 3084) depicts this scene, with no less than seven men fastened inside the waistcoat! For another portrait of Bright see ref. 41178.

A rolling prospect of Brighton's King's Road, illustrating the seafront architecture running from the publisher's premises on the corner of Ship Street, west to Waterloo Street in Hove. Among the existing buildings shown are Brunswick Terrace, The Norfolk Hotel (now the 'Mercure Brighton Seafront') and the west of Bedford Square. and street-life captured at a turning point in the town's history, just before its Victorian boom as a resort, precipitated by the arrival of the railway in 1841. A very rare lithograph. 255 x 368mm. 10 x 14½". Some foxing on right.
A view at Brighton, with the pier behind; a woman hold her naked child over the water, with a traditional beach bathing box on wheels to left. For Mason's "Fashionable Handbook for Visitors to Brighton", c.1846. In regency times and later when bathing at Brighton the bather floats or "Bobs" while being supervised. The supervisors where called "dippers" who pushed the bathers through the waves, keeping them afloat, then helped them back into the bathing machine. Brighton's most famous dipper was Martha Gunn, a large, sturdy woman whose fame exists to this day. See ref:Ref: 5306 for a portrait of Martha Gunn. See Ford: 128. "Images of Brighton".

Humphry Repton's design for a dining room at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton which, despite having the same Mughal influences, was never implemented. Despite being primarily a landscape designer, Repton (1752-1818) was hired to remodel the Pavilion by the Prince Regent in 1805. The Prince's money problems caused the project to be shelved, but John Nash made use of Repton's proposals when he finally redeveloped the building from 1814.

A pair of very decorative French photographic views of Brighton. The first is a view of the West Pier built in the 1860s, the second is a view of the old Brighton Aquarium with the Chain Pier behind, the Chain Pier was destroyed in a storm in 1896. Labels on the back of the frames state 'From Soper's Emporium Brighton'.

Two scenes of the Militia Camp near Brighton, showing the friendly relationship between the troops and the locals, especially the traders and girls. The camp was a frequent event during the first years of the French revolutionary wars, as it was a good venue for recruitment to the regular army, with bounties offered. It was held every year between 1792 and 1796, then in 1798 and 1803, with militias coming from all over the country. In 1793 Jane Austen's brother Henry was there with the Oxfordshire militia: she refers to the camp in her novel 'Pride and Prejudice'. The paintings by Francis Wheatley from which these derive were both painted in 1788. Webster E124-5;
