A satire on the South Northumberland election. The candidates with their arms up ready to box face each other. Matthew Bell (1793-1871) is on the left looking small and dapper, wearing top-boots, he is supported by five other men. On the right facing Bell are Thomas Wentworth Beaumont (1792-1841) and William Ord (1781–1855) taller, heavier, older, and wearing trousers and long frock-coats.

A caricature of the brutal bare-knuckled match with Rowlandson giving as much attention to the braying spectators as to the boxers. Ward, the better boxer, was beaten by Quirk, the stronger man.

A striking composition showing two boxers "holding" in the centre of a ring, the referee in black a tiny and marginal figure lower left; and utterly helpless spectator, he is powerless to separate the fighters and wrings his hands. A crowd is skilfully suggested through the ropes in the background. Harry Rountree (1880 - 1950) is most famous for his work illustrating Bernard Darwin's The Golf Courses of the British Isles; but he was also an illustrator for several British magazines.

William Boyce (1711-1779), organist, composer, and music editor, seated beside a classically-ornamented table on which also lies a volume lettered 'Dr Boyce..'. His left arm rests on sheet music, quill in his right hand. Curtain drape behind to left, column at right, church organ in background beyond. Master of the king's musick from 1757, Boyce composed music for state occasions following the death of Handel. This included music for the funeral of George II and the wedding of George III and Queen Charlotte. Boyce also had an interest in the history and science of music, and published an important three-volume work of church music, 'Cathedral Music', which was influential in the repertoire of church music over the next century. According to O'Donoghue this plate was published by John Keyse Sherwin (1751? - 1790) in 1775, so this could be a reissue.

Hugh Boyd (1746-1794) was educated at Trinity College Dublin and went on to become editor for the political paper, the Freeholder in Dublin, before moving to London where he joing the club attended by Johnson, Goldsmith and Burke. He accompanied Lord Macartney to India as his secretary and was captured and imprisoned by the French. He became Master-Attendant in Madras where he edited the Madras Courier and other Anglo-Indian journals. His miscellaneous works were published between 1798 and 1800, and there were many who believed him,(rather than Sir Philip Francis), to be the author of the 'Junius Letters', which had appeared in the Public Advertiser, London, from 1769 to 1772, attacking George III and his ministers.

Profile portrait of General Sir Robert Boyd (1710 - 1794), in uniform, oval frame on a pediment adorned with a heraldic family crest. In 1756 Boyd served at the Siege of Minorca, and attempted to reach Admiral John Byng's fleet in an open boat with a message from the besieged Garrison Commander William Blakeney. Boyd was a witness at the subsequent court-martial at which Byng was tried for the loss of the Garrison. He was three times Governor of Gibraltar; 1776 to 1777, 1790 and 1790 to 1794. A view of the enormous crowd gathered to watch the executions of William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock (1704-46) & Arthur Elphinstone, 6th Lord Balmerinoch (1688-1746), two supporters of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Both were captured at Culloden, tried, found guilty and beheaded, Elphinstone needing three blows of the axe. Elphinstone's famous last words were 'If I had a thousand lives, I would lay them all down in the same cause'. The British Museum dates their example, also with the Maiden Lane address added, to the 1760s: John Manson published his 'summer catalogue for 1762, Containing a valuable collection of books of prints and books in all languages and sciences lately purchased' from that address.

Three medallion portraits: an untitled one of William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock (1709-1746), flanked by portraits of two women. He was captured at the Battle of Cullodon and executed. The lines from John Gay's 'Beggar's Opera' refer to his statement after his capture: ''for the two Kings and their rights, I cared not a farthing which prevailed; but I was starving''.

John Boydell (1720-1804), very successful print publisher. He became alderman of Cheap Ward in 1782, and Lord Mayor of London in 1790. However the French Revolutionary Wars disrupted the Continental trade at the end of the C18th and Boydell was nearly bankrupt at his death in 1804.

An allegorical monument to scientists and philosophers Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689), Robert Boyle (1627-1691) and John Locke (1632-1704). From Eugene Mac-Swiny's 'Tombeaux des Princes, Grand Capitaines et Autres Hommes Illustres, Qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne'. Owen McSwiny, former manager of Drury Lane and the Haymarket Theatres, had travelled to Italy where he bought works of Italian painters, including Canaletto, to sell to English collectors. He also planned a series of historical pictures to decorate the Duke of Richmond's apartment at Goodwood, commemorating the deeds of famous Englishmen.

Two portraits in ovals, on the right Edmund Boyle, 7th Earl of Cork (1742-1798) and on the left a Miss Greenhill. Following the breakdown of his marriage in 1773 to Anne Courtenay whom he married in 1764, Boyle struck an arrangement with a courtesan named Miss Greenhill. In an attempt to divorce his wife Boyle accused her of intimacy with a musician however, this was not successful. The marriage was finally dissolved in 1782. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility.

Robert Boyle (1627-1691) the natural philospher, chemist, physicist and inventor; his book 'The Sceptical Chymist' is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry, and as one of the founders of modern chemisty he is known for his 'Boyle's Law'. One of a number of stipple heads for the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature' by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810.
