One of the finest etchers of the old tradition, influenced by Seymour Haden and represented in the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum. He exhibited at the Royal Academy. This unusally large scene is combining his talent for both landscape and architecture.

Oblong 8vo, disbound; etched frontispiece and twelve plates (six views and six verses with vignettes, titles for the plates), as called for, printed in sepia, each sheet 195 x 265mm (7¾ x 10½"), tissue guards. Lacking cardboard covers, first two plates separated from binding block, holes for original ribbon in left margin, frontis. spotted, occasional spotting elsewhere.
A rare complete set of 13 etchings of Westminster Abbey by the American etcher John Sloan (1871-1951). Sloan was commissioned by A. Edward Newton (1864-1940), later a well-known book collector. As Sloan never left America, he based his illustrations on photogravures by English artist Alfred Dawson (1843-1931). The set was issued in cardboard covers with a gilt illustration of the exterior of the abbey and hand-painted flowers, lacking here.

A view of Westminster Bridge. Westminster was proposed as early as 1664, but was opposed by the Corporation of London and the watermen. Eventually, funded by private capital, lotteries and grants, it was designed by Swiss architect Charles Labelye, and built between 1739 and 1750.

Engraving, paper watermarked with large margins. Plate 255 x 420mm (10 x 16½").
A very fine view down the River Thames, with Westminster Bridge in the centre and St Paul's in the distance at the right; a number of boats on the water. The tower on the north side of the river is an octagonal water tower. Extensive text in English and French below. Westminster Bridge was the second London bridge to be built, and inspired, amongst other tributes, Wordsworth's 'Upon Westminster Bridge' beginning 'Earth has not anything to show more fair'. John Boydell's 'Collection of Views' was made after he turned from engraver to print publisher in 1767. The first collection was issued in 1770, and included some plates by printmakers other than himself.
