D. Smith 1929 [pencil signature lower right]
Aquatint with very large margins, very scarce, platemark 200 x 230mm (8 x 9").
Probably a portrait of Hubert L. Wellington (1879-1967), artist and art teacher. Wellington arrived at the Slade to study at the same time as Wyndham Lewis, and was close friends with Camden Town Group members Spencer Gore and Harold Gilman. Wellington's work is in the Tate collection, but it was as a teacher that he made his most important contribution, working as lecturer and registrar from 1923-32 (during which time this print was made), and later becoming principal at Edinburgh College of Art and the Slade. Wellington's DNB entry was written by Sir William Coldstream, whose time at the Slade overlapped with Wellington's.

H.G. Wells.
H.G. Wells. Supplement to the New Statesman, January 16, 1926. (1)
Low.
Etching. 330 x 228mm.
Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was an English author, best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. Together with Jules Verne, Wells has been referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction". Wells was an outspoken socialist and a pacifist, and his later works became increasingly political and didactic. His middle period novels (1900-1920) were more realistic; they covered lower-middle class life (The History of Mr Polly) and the 'New Woman' and the Suffragettes (Ann Veronica).

Mezzotint and etching with remarque of Epworth Church. Plate 349 x 252mm. 13¾ x 10". Some time staining.
John Wesley (1703-1791) the founder of the Methodist movement which, under his organisation, grew from the 'Holy Club' of his Oxford friends into a great religious rival. An indefatigable traveller, preacher and writer, Wesley averaged 8,000 miles a year on horseback and gave 15 sermons a week. He was the brother of Charles, the divine and hymn-writer, and uncle of Samuel Wesley, the composer and organist. The movement took form from its third rise in the early 1740s with Wesley, along with others, itinerant field preaching and the subsequent founding of religious societies for the formation of believers. This was the first widely successful evangelical movement in the United Kingdom. Wesley's Methodist Connexion included societies throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland before spreading to other parts of the English-speaking world and beyond. He divided his religious societies further into classes and bands for intensive accountability and religious instruction.
