A view of the Tower of London, with barges in the foreground on the River Thames. By Rowland Langmaid (1897-1956), the marine painter and etcher who studied under William Lionel Wylie. He joined the Royal Navy in 1910 went to sea at the beginning of the First World War, during which he made a series of sketches for landings. After the war he studied at the Royal Academy School and the Royal College of Art, and later returned to the Active List in 1939 in the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served as official Admiralty artist to the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean Fleet from 1941 to 1943.

A view across a busy River Thames, with various steam barges and rowing vessels, towards the Tower of London. William L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley's art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870's Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Wyllie died on the 6th April 1931 in Hampstead, and scouts from the 1st Portchester Sea Scout Troop, which he had founded, rowed his coffin across Portsmouth Harbour for his burial at Portchester Castle.

The worst fire in the history of the Tower of London, destroying the Bowyer and Brick Towers and damaging the White Tower and the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula. The Martin Tower, where the crown jewels were kept, was threatened and, as the Keeper of the Jewel House had only the key, the security bars had to be bent to get in to save them. The uniform of the policeman who passed out the crown jewels was actually charred. Published in 'The Fly'.

The seated man, Thomas Coventry (1792-1869), a country parson, is being blackmailed by his rakish brother Lord Deerhurst for some indiscretion. Full length portrait of Field Marshal George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend (1724 -1807), wearing armour, with his hand resting on a table, and a tent and cavalry behind him. Townshend fought at the Battle of Culloden during the Jacobite Rising in 1745 and the Battle of Lauffeld during the War of the Austrian Succession in 1747. He served as a brigadier in Quebec, under General James Wolfe, and took command of the British forces during the siege of Quebec. He held General Wolfe in much contempt and was harshly criticized upon his return to Great Britain. Townshend was eventually promoted to general in 1782, and elevated to the marquessate in 1787. He became a field marshal on 30 July 1796, and was appointed Governor of Jersey until 1806.

Two bust portraits set in ovals illustrating the account of Thomas Townshend (1733-1800) later Baron Sydney who served as Secretary of State for the Home department during Pitt's administration and a Miss Wharton who was the daughter of an apothecary. Sydney, Australia, was named after him. Wharton, after being left in financial difficulty following the death of her father, was induced to become the mistress of a French marquis and then the Duke of Queensbury until she was saved by Sydney. From the 'Histories of the Tête à Tête annexed...' series that appeared in 'Town and Country Magazine', a monthy magazine which featured articles on the scandals and romantic affairs of the nobility. Scene set within a decorative oval in which two woman stand in a toy shop, one looks in a box and weeps while the shop keeper leans over the counter looking concerned. The eighteenth century 'toyshop' was not restricted only to children's playthings but sold all sorts of trinkets and decorative items and 'toymen' would often double as jewellers and watchmakers.
