The fire of 22 June 1861, which destroyed Cotton's Wharf & Chamberlain's Wharf, between Tooley Street and the Thames (site of London Bridge Hospital). It burned for over two weeks, destroying three acres and about £2 million of goods, including hemp, cotton, sacks of sugar, wooden casks of tallow, bales of jute, boxes of tea and spices. At least six men were killed, including the captain of the fire brigade, James Braidwood (whose facsimile signature appears lower left), crushed by a falling wall. James Thomas Loveday, 'Surveyor of Risks' of the Phoenix Fire Office spent two and a half years compiling plans of wharves and granaries along the Thames to assess fire risk for insurance purposes. This plan, detailing the owners of the affected buildings, was adapted for the 'Weekly Dispatch Atlas', a periodical. This volume held at Guildhall Library, covers an area on the south bank of the Thames from London Bridge to the Globe Granary at Rotherhithe and on the north bank from London Bridge to Tower Dock.

Colonel (later General Sir Frederick) Trench originated the idea of the Thames Embankment, for which a bill was (unsuccessfully) presented to Parliament in 1825. Revived, work on the Embankment started in 1864, although to a different design than is shown here. Drawn by Thomas Mann Baynes, the panorama shows the riverside as it appeared in 1825, from Westminster to London Bridge, with Trench's proposed embankment running from Whitehall to Blackfriars Bridge, with the skyline of London shown correctly above; this would have been one of nine lithographic sheets.

They include engraver and publisher Jean Fréderic Ostervald (1773 - 1850, centre, just above lettering), the painter Maximilien de Meuron (1785 - 1865, upper left), the painter Mathias-Gabriel Lory (1784-1846) and the painter Friedrich Wilhelm Moritz (1783-1855). It appears these gentlemen travelled to Paris together in 1822.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the Chelsea Historical Pageant, held from the 25th June to July 1st, 1908, in which a series of historical re-enactments were performed. The 'Master of the Pageant' was J. Harry Irvine, an actor who performed Hamlet and Macbeth on Broadway a decade later. Within a border of flags and leaves is an actor dressed as Charles II, founder of the Royal Hospital. Mrs S. Burgess specialised in these paper souvenirs in the early 20th century.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the coronation of George V. Within a border of flags and leaves are portraits of George and Queen Mary and an itinerary. The East London Printing Company was founded by Alexander Bloom c.1896 in Whitechapel Road, moving to Houndsditch in 1908. Postcards were a large part of their output, both comic and topical. In 1911, the same year as the coronation, Bloom photographed the progress of the Sidney Street Siege, making postcards for boys to sell to queues outside West End Theatres, the most popular one being a portrait of Winston Churchill. The firm folded in the 1930s.

The text gives an order of events and a list of 'The Bearers of the Kings' Regalia. Mrs S. Burgess specialised in these paper souvenirs in the early 20th century, based in York Place, off The Strand; proof-reading was not her strong point.

Within a border of flags and leaves are portraits of George, Mary and the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII), and a schedule. They had disembarked from HMS Medina at Portrsmouth, taking the Royal Train to Victoria then a coach to Buckingham Palace via Parliament Square and Whitehall. Mrs S. Burgess specialised in these paper souvenirs in the early 20th century.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the visit of Haakon VII (1872-1957), elected king of Norway after the 1905 dissolution of the personal union with Sweden. He visited London in 1906 with his wife, Maud of Wales, daughter of England's Edward VII. He reigned for nearly 52 years.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the visit of Manuel II, last king of Portugal, to London. It had been Manuel's father's hope to marry him to a British princess in order to win a strong ally, but King Carlos's assassination the previous year and the ensuing political instability dashed this plan. Manuel was appointed Knight of the Order of the Garter during this visit, but the support of Britain could not save his throne from the revolution of the following year. He escaped to England via Gibraltar, living in Fulwell Park, Twickenham until his death in 1932.

A very rare souvenir handkerchief commemorating the November 1907 visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II to London. The design features portraits of Wilhelm and Empress Augusta Victoria, the Hohenzollern eagle and the black, white & red flag of the German Empire. The visit briefly improved the relationship between Britain and Queen Victoria's eldest grandson, but the following year he gave an interview with the Daily Telegraph in which he implied that the Germans cared nothing for the British and was quoted as saying 'You English are mad, mad, mad as March hares'. His remarks infuriated the German Foreign Office and insulted the British, French, Russians and Japanese.

The design features portraits of Wilhelm and Empress Augusta Victoria, the Hohenzollern eagle and the black, white & red flag of the German Empire. The visit briefly improved the relationship between Britain and Queen Victoria's eldest grandson, but the following year he gave an interview with the Daily Telegraph in which he implied that the Germans cared nothing for the British and was quoted as saying 'You English are mad, mad, mad as March hares'. His remarks infuriated the German Foreign Office and insulted the British, French, Russians and Japanese.

Extremely scare & wonderful image, a survivor of the 17th century. A portrait of 'The Sovereign of the Seas', one of the biggest warships of the Stuart navy, ordered by Charles I as part of the arms race with the Dutch and paid for with the notorious 'Ship Money' tax that made Charles so unpopular. This is a reduced copy of a two-sheet engraving by John Payne, published as a propaganda piece c.1638, with added key letters (key not present). Built by Peter Pett and launched in 1637, the 'Sovereign of the Seas' had 102 guns as specified by Royal command, but soon after she entered service the number was cut to make her faster and safer. The diarist John Evelyn described her as 'a monstrous vessel ... being for burthen, defense and ornament the richest that ever spread cloth before the wind'. During the Commonwealth she was renamed, first 'Commonwealth' then 'Sovereign', before being made the 'Royal Sovereign' on the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. She survived the three Anglo-Dutch Wars and the Nine Years' War with the French only to burn while laid up at Chatham in 1697.
