Behind the screen, several shadowy figures appear three men on the left, one holding a staff of office, and a woman on the right clenching her fist, with the shadows of other women visible near a map of Antwerp. The screen itself is decorated with eight symbolic scenes: a criminal being flogged at the Moenian column, Roger Bacon’s brazen head, a Roman accepting a bribe, the dying figure of Britannia, a criminal hurled from the Tarpeian rock, the murder of Jan and Cornelis de Wit, a gallows on Tower Hill, and the fallen personification of London stabbed in the breast.
