The Songsters
The Songsters From an Original Painting by Peter de Laar, in the possession of the Publisher.
Drawn, Printed & Published October 1837, at A. Friedel's Lithographic Establishment, 252, Tottenham Court Road, London.
Lithograph. Printed area 300 x 200mm (11¾ x 8").
A couple in a tavern sing from a songsheet. Both have clay pipes in their hands. After Pieter de Laer (1599-c.1641). Adam Friedel (1780- death date unknown) was a Danish artist, printmaker and publisher who, after serving in the Napoleonic wars, voluntarily joined the Greek army at the start of the Greek War of Independence, fashioning himself as Danish nobility. He was exposed by a real noble who proved his backstory to be a lie. After spending a year in Egypt he took refuge in London in 1824 where he opened a lithographer's shop. Between 1825 and 1826 Friedel printed and published, both in Paris and London, twenty-four lithographs with portraits of politicians and prominent military figures of the Greek War of Independence. He had drawn the portraits himself, in most cases from nature, while J. Bouvier coloured and lithographed these images. The series was a success and he was awarded for his contributions to the Greek Struggle for Independence with two decorations. For health reasons he travelled around a lot. He travelled to Smyrna and taught at a Greek school. He stayed at the Ottoman Capital during the Crimean War and painted several portraits of various politicians. In 1865 he asked for a pension for his services to Greece however little is known about what happened to him after that and his place and date of death is unknown.

F. Marryat. J. Brandard.
M. & N. Hanhart, imp.t. [n.d., 1855.]
Rare tinted lithograph. Sheet 135 x 200mm (5¼ x 8").
A man sits on the horse he is auctioning, taking bids from a crowd of men from various classes, including Spaniards, Chinese, businessmen, pioneers, and African Americans. Behind is 'The Miner's Saloon'. From Frank Samuel Marryat's ''Mountains and Molehills, or Recollections of a Burnt Journal'', a sportsman-tourist's chronicle of California in the early 1850s, describing hunting, horse races, bear and bull fights. It also includes his bemused comments on social life in San Francisco, Stockton, and the gold fields. Marryat (1826-1855) left England for California via Panama with a manservant and three hunting dogs in 1850, hoping to find material for a book like his earlier Borneo. He returned to England in 1853 to marry; returning to California the same year he contracted yellow fever on board, forcing him to cut short the trip short and return to England, published this book just before he died.

Sooty Dun the Devil's Mealman.
Pubd accord to Act Oct 30 1772 by MDarly 39 Strand.
Etching, paper watermarked. Plate 178 x 128mm (7 x 5"). Small margins.
A whole length figure running forwards; he is grinning. In his right hand he holds up a short shovel and in his left a brush. His clothes are ragged and his toes appear through remnants of buckled shoes. He wears a laced hat, cravata and a ruffled shirt. In place of a wig is what appears to be a tightly-curled lamb's fleece resting on his shoulders; two pieces of crossed wood imitate a sword. A miniature figure in ragged clothes and a long thin queue faces him astride a tasslled cane. According to the BM, he is a chimney sweep dressed for the first of May celebrations which were usual in London. The small figure may represent a child-apprentice or climbing boy, though there is nothing juvenile in its appearance.

A plan of the gardens of Catshuis, the official residence of the prime minister of the Netherlands since 1963, with a view of the Orangerie. Built by (and now named after) Jacob Cats (1577-1660), a poet and politician, the house was acquired in 1674 by Hans William, Baron Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland (1649-1709), who began to redesign the gardens as shown here in the same year. Bentinck's coat of arms is shown lower left of the plan. As Bentinck was a favourite of the stadtholder William Henry, Prince of Orange (later William III of England) the Orangery was a significant feature. The key under the Orangery view links to that of the plan. Drawn and engraved by Johannes vande Avelen for Nicolaus Janszen Visscher's 'Het Schoone Perk van Sorgvliet', c.1690.
