[Six Japanese-language San Francisco Newspapers, 1893-5]
Six newspapers, each 4pp, pages each approx 410 x 280mm (16 x 11"). Folded.
Includes copies of 'The San Francisco' and 'The New World', as well as articles, the newspapers contain cartoons and adverts. Following the 1868 Meiji Restoration in Japan small numbers of Japanese immigrants started journeying to the west coast of the USA in hopes of a better life, however, it wasn't until 1885 that Japanese immigrants started arriving in large numbers. The immigration of the Japanese was encouraged by the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act which barred new Chinese immigrants from entering the country which forced large business owners to look to Japan for cheap labour. Large port towns such as San Francisco attracted the highest numbers of immigrants. Newspapers and magazines such as these contained information from both Japan and the rest of the USA and were distributed around California.

El Escorial in Madrid, the historial royal residence of the King of Spain, in particular Philip II. It served as a monastery, royal palace and tomb. It was King Philip's reaction to the Protestant Reformation, providing lodgings for the Hieronymite monks. Its structure is based on descriptions of Solomon's temple. Philip's most important contribution to the building was the donation of his personal collection of documents providing material for what was to become one of Europe's finest libraries.

Lithograph. Sheet 444 x 596mm (17½ x 23½").
When Napoleon I had completed his conquest of Northern Italy and began to push his armies towards the edges of the norther territories of the Papal State, San Marino found itself forced to choose between maintaining the alliance with the Papal State or creating a new one with France. One of the Regents, Antonio Onofri, managed to gain the respect and friendship of Napoleon, and so Napoleon issued orders that exempted San Marino's citizens from any type of taxation and gifted them 1,000 quintals of wheat and four cannons. The state was recognised by Napoleon by the Treaty of Tolentino, 1797 and by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Published in A.V. Arnault's 'Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon', Paris, 1822-1826.

[Engraved by by Jacques Philippe Le Bas.]
Avec privilège du Roy. [Published by Le Bas, Jacques François Blondel, and Veuve Chéreau, Paris, 1757.]
Etching, image 253 x 360mm. Trimmed within plate.
The tower of San Roque in Lisbon after its destruction in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The Great Lisbon Earthquake took place on November 1, 1755 at around 9:40 in the morning. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami and fire, which caused near-total destruction of the city and adjoining areas. Estimates place the death toll between 60,000 to 100,000 people, making it one of the most destructive earthquakes in history. The earthquake accentuated political tensions in Portugal and profoundly disrupted the country's eighteenth century colonial ambitions. The event was widely discussed and dwelt upon by European Enlightenment philosophers, and inspired major developments in theodicy and in the philosophy of the sublime. As the first earthquake studied scientifically for its effects over a large area, it led to the birth of modern seismology. Plate 1 from a series consisting of a titleplate and six views, 'Recueil des plus belles ruines de Lisbonne causées par le tremblement et par le feu du premier Novembre 1755'. The artists, MM. Paris and Pedegache were probably amateur local artists. The series was advertised by Le Bas in the 'Mercure de France' in March 1758 at the price of 12 livres on grand papier de chapelet, and 10 livres on grand raisin. A set of six piracies of the views was published by Robert Sayer in London (see 7971).

George Sand (Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, later Baroness Dudevant) (1804 - 1876), novelist and feminist. George Sand was an amazing author, personality, and all-around woman. She earned as much notoriety for her Bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. Born Aurore Dupin, she was the most famous woman writer in 19th-century France. A prolific and iconoclastic author of novels, stories, plays, essays, and memoirs, she represented the epitome of French romantic idealism. She demanded for women the freedom in living that was a matter of course to the men of her day. George's first independent novel, Indiana, the story of an unhappy wife who struggles to free herself from the imprisonment of marriage (explicitly called a form of slavery), made her an overnight celebrity. Subsequent novels, such as Valentine and Lélia, astounded readers with their frank exploration of women's sexual feelings and their passionate call for women's freedom to find emotional satisfaction. In the eyes of many critics, George's masterpiece is her autobiography. Though she was a brilliant writer, she was perhaps most famous for her personality and lifestyle.

North & South of Great Britain.
Will.m Hogarth delin [but Paul Sandby]. F.B_ Sculp.
Published June the 11th, 1781 at the Ancient & Modern Print Warehouse No. 28 in the Hay Market by A. Torre and J. Thane.
Etching, proof? 150 x 185mm (6 x 7¼"); in ink verso "It is almost certain that this is an Imposition"; very large margins. Some soiling.
A satire on the perennial north-south divide, comparing an emaciated Scot dressed in rags in front of Edinburgh Castle with a portly Londoner with St Paul's Cathedral behind. A later state, with the same publication date but with added aquatint, has Paul Sandby's name instead of Hogarth's. This is the more likely attribution: certainly this print is not listed in Paulson's bibliography of Hogarth. The BM posits that the engraver might be Francesco Bartolozzi, but it most likely to be the work of Sandby as well. Anthony Torre and John Thane worked together only 1781-82, before handing over their business at the Ancient and Modern Print Warehouse to Paul Colnaghi. See BM Satires 3799 for a state with Hogarth's name but without the engraver's initials, and the same number for the finished version.

Title page to the set of views in north Wales published in 1776 by Paul Sandby (bap. 1731, d. 1809). Sandby, one of the foremost landscape artists of his generation, had published a similar set of views in south Wales the previous year, having collected material during sketching tours in 1771 and 1773 with Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, Charles Greville, and Joseph Banks, the dedicatees of the two sets. Over the coming decades Wales became highly popular amongst tourists searching for romantic and picturesque landscapes, due in no small part to Sandby's popular depictions.
