[Seven plates depicting the Acts of St Peter and St Paul.]
Raphael Urbin pinx.t. [Various engravers.]
1721.
Seven engravings. Platemark: 350 x 515mm (13¾ x 20¼") each approx. Some damage in margins. Publication details scratched on 4/7 items. Very large margins.
Raphael was commissioned by Pope Leo X to design a set of large designs for tapestries to cover the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel. In 1623 the seven cartoons, depicting the Acts of St Peter and St Paul, were brought to England by Charles I. They were long displayed at Hampton Court and various engravings such as these in the 18th century reinforced the reputation of the cartoons as some of the most significant artworks in the country. Since 1865 they have been on loan from the Royal Collection to London's Victoria & Albert Museum, where they are permanently displayed together. The seven engravings are: The Miraculous Draught of Fishes; Christ's Charge to Peter; The Lame Man Healed by Peter & John; The Death of Ananias; Elymas the Sorcerer, Struck with Blindness; Paul and Barnabas at Lystra; and Paul Preaching at Athens. For the cartoons as displayed at Hampton Court, see ref. 16693. For a later set in mezzotint, see item ref: 34028.

Seven mezzotints, rare in original wrappers, 210 x 300mm (8¼ x 11¾"); very large margins.

[Four heads from the Raphael Cartoons at Hampton Court.] M.r Walpole in his Anecdotes of Painting &c. Vol. IV. p.22. speaking of the Cartoons at Hampton Court, observes that Sir John Thornhill ''having made copious studies of the heads, hands and feet, intended to publish an exact account of the whole, for the use of students: but this work has never appeared''. As the present plate was found among others belonging to the late M.r Hogarth, it is not impossible but that it might have been engraved by him for his father-in-law S.r James's intended publication.
Published as the Act directs May 14, 1781 by M.rs Hogarth, at the Golden Head, Leicester Fields.
Etching. 360 x 215mm (14¼ x 8½"). Narrow margins, laid on album paper.
A detail of one of Raphael's cartoons at Hampton Court, 'The Conversion of the Proconsul (Acts 13: 6-12)', now in the V&A. To the right is the Jewish sorcerer Elymas who Paul struck blind when Elymas attempted to stop Paul converting the proconsul Sergius Paulus; to the left are the head of three of the onlookers. John Thornhill (father of William Hogarth's wife, Jane, the publiher of the print) studied the cartoons in 1729. Paulson suggests that it is possible that he also etched the plate (as the work does not resemble Hogarth's), and Jane used the more profitable name of Hogarth. Paulson: 264, state ii of ii.

The portraits on this sheet include: the artist Fra Angelico, a self-portrait of Raphael, the architect Bramante, Popes Gregory I and Jerome; and (upper level left-right) the Biblical figures of Peter, Adam, John the Evangelist, David, Stephen, Joshua and Mary. London, Printed & Published 1837 by A. Friedel, 252, Tottenham Court Road.
Lithograph. Printed area 310 x 210mm (12¼ x 8¼") with very large margins.
After Cornelis Visscher (1629-58). Adam Friedel (1780- death date unknown) was a Danish artist, printmaker and publisher who, after serving in the Napoleonic wars, voluntarily joined the Greek army at the start of the Greek War of Independence, fashioning himself as Danish nobility. He was exposed by a real noble who proved his backstory to be a lie. After spending a year in Egypt he took refuge in London in 1824 where he opened a lithographer's shop. Between 1825 and 1826 Friedel printed and published, both in Paris and London, twenty-four lithographs with portraits of politicians and prominent military figures of the Greek War of Independence. He had drawn the portraits himself, in most cases from nature, while J. Bouvier coloured and lithographed these images. The series was a success and he was awarded for his contributions to the Greek Struggle for Independence with two decorations. For health reasons he travelled around a lot. He travelled to Smyrna and taught at a Greek school. He stayed at the Ottoman Capital during the Crimean War and painted several portraits of various politicians. In 1865 he asked for a pension for his services to Greece however little is known about what happened to him after that and his place and date of death is unknown.

The rat hunt; or John Bull and his master turning out the vermin. Tune-"A hunting we will go."' The straw is being mov'd, my boys, The Rats begin to run...
J. Fairburn Broadway Ludgate Hill London. [n.d. 1831]
Hand-coloured etching, fine colour, 250 x 360mm (10 x 14¼"). Trimmed within plate and laid on backing sheet.
Satire on the 1831 dissolution of parliament to call a general election for the purpose of passing its Reform Bill. John Bull uses a pitchfork marked “Reform” to drive human-faced rats out of his barn. His dog, bearing Brougham’s (1778-1868) bewigged head, lunges at them, encouraged by William IV (1765-1837), who leans forward and commands, “Get out, you vermin.” The rats have been gnawing malt sacks; one reads “This is the Malt that lay in the house that Jack built.” Newcastle (1785-1851) still chews at it, with (London) Derry (1778- 1854) just below. Brougham moves toward a mitred rat-bishop (Robert Gray, Bishop of Bristol (1762-1834)) and Eldon (1751-1838) (“Old Bags”). John Bull’s fork has just knocked Wellington (1769-1852) and Peel (1788-1850), tagged “Water Rat” and “Orange Peel”, from the top of a sack. Other rats scatter toward their holes. BM Satires 16689.

The Augean Stables. Rattlesnake or Adelaide Punch No. 1.
JH [monogram].
[Adelaide: Haddrick and East] Thursday, January 24, 1878.
Lithograph. 275 x 425mm (10¾ x 16¾"). Trimmed, losing explanatory title, split in centre fold repaired, laid on archival tissue.
An allegorical figure of Adelaide thanks Hercules (holding a theatrical mask over his face), for cleaning out the ghostly figures of 'Fever', 'Contagion' and 'Malaria', referring to 'Mr Clark' and asks if he can help to get rid of another nuisance. A bearded man, possibly journalist John Howward Clark (1830-78), sits to one side. Unfortunately a second, explanatory title has been lost. An extremely rare satire from the first issue of the 'Rattlesnake or Adelaide Punch', a fortnightly Australian humorous magazine. It survived for only a few issues, before failing and being taken over by the printers, Scrymgour and Sons. Renamed 'The Adelaide Punch', it lasted until 1884.

[WITH SIGNATURE OF THE FIRST GOVERNOR OF NEW ZEALAND] A Daily Report of the Progress made in the Equipment of His Majesty's [Ship Rattlesnake, Rio de Janeiro] Captain [William Hobson] the [15th] of [May] 18[35]. [W.Hobson Captain].
[1835.]

A daily ship's report form signed by the captain of HMS Rattlesnake (1822), William Hobson (1792-1842), during its voyage to join the Far East squadron in Australia. Arriving in Australia in August 1836, Hobson and his officers thoroughly surveyed Port Phillip as part of the founding of the colony that is now Melbourne. In May 1837 the Rattlesnake sailed to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, to help the British Resident deal with a Maori tribal war. Back in England in 1838 Hobson proposed establishing British sovereignty in New Zealand; returning in 1840 he drafted the Treaty of Waitangi and became first governor of the British colony 1841. He died of a stroke the following year.
