Nineteen etchings with original stitching, each sheet 305 x 225mm (12 x 9). Mint condition, very large margins. Mint condition.
Volume of military prints designed by Charles Parrocel (1688-1752), twelve of which are etched by J.G. Wille and the remainder by Parrocel himself. The set appears to be made up of prints from two different publications, 'Recueil de 19 Planches Différentes études de Soldats' (etched by Parrocel) and 'Reitres et Lansquenets' (etched by Wille after Parrocel). Like his father Joseph, Parrocel was principally a painter of battles and hunts. He was present at several battles during the War of the Austrian Succession which he intended to depict in a series of pictures for the chateau of Choisy (although he only completed two, now at Versailles).

Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855) was an English rear-admiral and Arctic explorer. Parry served as Commissioner of the Australian Agricultural Company based at Tahlee on the northern shore of Port Stephens New South Wales, Australia from 1829 to 1834. Parry was subsequently selected for the post of comptroller of the newly-created department of steam machinery of the Navy, and held this office until his retirement from active service in 1846, when he was appointed captain-superintendent of Haslar Hospital. He attained the rank of rear-admiral in 1852, and in the following year became a governor of Greenwich Hospital, and retained this post until his death. Sir Edward Parry’s character was influenced by his unwavering belief in Jesus Christ, and besides the journals of his different voyages he also wrote a Lecture to Seamen, and Thoughts on the Parental Character of God.

A three-quarter portrait of Humphrey Parsons (1676-1741), brewer and twice Lord Mayor of London, standing with St Paul's Cathedral dominating the background. Parsons owned the Red Lion brewery in East Smithfield and was principal exporter of beer to France because his goods were exempt from import duty, thanks to his personal relationship with Louis XV. Thus he became the Old Pretender's leading contact in the City of London.

A half portrait of Sir William Parsons, Third Earl of Rosse (1800-1867), seated and looking to the left. Parsons was a notable amateur astronomer, elected president of the UK Royal Society in 1848. With money not being an issue for the Earl who owned several estates in Ireland, Parsons is most remembered for his construction of a number of giant telescopes, the largest and final one constructed known as the 'Leviathan of Parsonstown'.

William Parsons (1736-95), actor. Beginning his career in York and Edinburgh, he was brought to London by the great David Garrick and eventually joined the company at the Haymarket Theatre. A popular and versatile actor, Parsons was also a keen painter of landscapes influenced by those of Richard Wilson. Engraved after a painting by draughtsman and singer Robert Dighton (1751-1814) by the mezzotint engraver and printseller Robert Laurie (1755?-1836). Music, instruments and mask (representing theatre) in title area.

William Parsons (1736-95), actor. Beginning his career in York and Edinburgh, he was brought to London by the great David Garrick and eventually joined the company at the Haymarket Theatre. A popular and versatile actor, Parsons was also a keen painter of landscapes influenced by those of Richard Wilson. Engraved after a painting by draughtsman and singer Robert Dighton (1751-1814) by the mezzotint engraver and printseller Robert Laurie (1755?-1836). Music, instruments and mask (representing theatre) in title area.

First published by S. & J. Fuller in 1836, this example comes from 'Sheldon's Celebrated Racing Sires', with an extensive dedication to Lord Lowther removed. Little is known about James Sheldon: the British Museum biography only gives his address and ''publisher/printer; British; Male; 1850s; fl. c.''. Hickman mentions these reprints without venturing a date.

An astrologer sits in his study, surrounded by customers and the tools of his trade. 'Silvester Partridge' was the invention of satirist Thomas Brown (1662-1704), who published weekly instalments of a parody, 'The Infallible Astrologer', by 'Mr Silvester Partridge'. He based his character on on 'real' astrologers John Silvester and John Partridge.
