The Entomologist.
The Entomologist.
A Ducote's Lithog.y 70, St. Martins Lane.
Published by Thos McLean, 26, Haymarket Aug.t 8.th 1832.
Coloured lithograph. 306 x 445mm (12 x 17½"). Foxing and staining.
A fun scientific image. Brougham sits, paint-brush in hand, his right eye looking through a magnifying-glass fixed before a slide on which are insects. On a large drawing-board propped on his table is the Magnified View of the ' "Cimex lectularius" (Common Bug)', and beside it the insect 'Natural size'. The enlarged bug, as drawn by Brougham, has the head of Sugden, in a barrister's wig, which is turned in profile to gaze apprehensively at the artist. On the table is a completed drawing of a gnat-like insect with a barrister's head; other drawings are on the floor: a grasshopper wearing a bishop's wig and mitre; a caterpillar and butterfly, each with a human head (the latter, with horn-like antennae, resembles Ellenborough). Under the large table are drawers for specimens, and behind Brougham is a glass case of big butterflies.

Entomology. Bless me what a surprising Beetle.
[after Edward Stanley.]
[n.d. c.1825.]
Coloured lithograph on card. 196 x 252mm (7¾ x 10"). Foxing.
A Victorian entomologist creeps up on an unsuspecting stag beetle; he grins with excitement as he holds out his net and other Victorian capturing instrument. See Ref: 37175 for complete set. From a collection of Six amateur caricatures, drawn by Edward Stanley (1779-1849), who served as Bishop of Norwich 1837-1849. At the time of publication he was rector of Alderley, Cheshire, a position he held for 32 years. This and the two other satires he produced ('Bustle’s Banquet' & 'Dinner of the Dogs') were probably published locally, accounting for the absence of these caricatures in our national collections. His authorship is only confirmed by the 1907 publication of his collected letters.

Spectators watch an exhibition of horsemanship or jousting tournament from the galleries of an decorated interior. A vue d'optique intended to be viewed through a convex lens. The devices, known variously as zograscopes, optiques, optical machines and peepshows, were an optical entertainment of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Vues d'optiques were rendered in high-key color and dramatic linear perspective, which enhanced the illusion of three-dimensionality when viewed through the lens. Erasme.
Erasme.
[n.d. c.1740.]
Line engraving. Plate 296 x 214mm. 11¾ x 8½".
Desiderius Erasmus (1466?-1536), Dutch Renaissance humanist and a Catholic theologian. Erasmus was a classical scholar who wrote in a "pure" Latin style and enjoyed the sobriquet "Prince of the Humanists." He has been called "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists." Using humanist techniques for working on texts, he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament. These raised questions that would be influential in the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation. He also wrote The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, Julius Exclusus, and many other works. Erasmus lived through the Reformation period and he consistently criticized some contemporary popular Christian beliefs. In relation to clerical abuses in the Church, Erasmus remained committed to reforming the Church from within. He also held to Catholic doctrines such as that of free will, which some Protestant Reformers rejected in favor of the doctrine of predestination. His middle road disappointed and even angered many Protestants, such as Martin Luther, as well as conservative Catholics. This engraving is based on the Holbein portrait.

Desiderius Erasmus Rotterodamus. Qui Patriae lumen qui nostri gloria fech [...]
Vorsterman sculptor D.D.: Hansus Holbenius pinxit. Cum Privilegio Reg: [c.1625]
Engraving, sheet 215 x 145mm (8½ x 5¾"). Trimmed to plate.
Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), Dutch Renaissance humanist and a Catholic theologian. Erasmus prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament, and also wrote The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, Julius Exclusus, and many other works. Erasmus lived through the Reformation period and he consistently criticized some contemporary popular Christian beliefs. In relation to clerical abuses in the Church, Erasmus remained committed to reforming the Church from within. He also held to Catholic doctrines such as that of free will, which some Protestant Reformers rejected in favour of the doctrine of predestination. His middle road disappointed and even angered many Protestants, such as Martin Luther, as well as conservative Catholics. One of the earliest of many prints reproducing the famous 1532 portrait of Erasmus by Hans Holbein the younger. Engraved by Lucas Vorsterman I (1595-1675), a favoured engraver of his contemporaries Rubens and Van Dyck. Despite his close relationship with Rubens (who was godfather to Vorsterman's eldest son), the engraver felt exploited by the famous painter. At one point Vorsterman made an attempt on Rubens' life, and subsequently moved to England, where he was employed by Charles I, Thomas Howard and the Earl of Pembroke to reproduce paintings from their collections. Howard was then the owner of this picture (one of many versions of the portrait that exist but one of the only ones believed to be painted by Holbein himself). The painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Published in the 'Iconographia' series of etchings after portraits by van Dyck, some of which van Dyck etched himself.
