Sebastian Erard (1752-1855), French piano builder. He started in Paris as an apprentice to a harpsichord builder, but this changed after he saw the arrival of some early English square pianos, and by 1777 he was constructing his own. The evolution of his designs impressed not only the Frnech but also Louis XVI, and he was therefore granted a license to produce pianos. John Broadwood (1732-1812), British, was the founder of the piano manufacturer Broadwood and Sons. Along with William Stodart and Americus Backers, he was credited for devising the prototype for the grand piano, which eventually overtook sales of harpsichords. His other technical innovations include: adding a separate bridge for the bass notes, patenting the piano pedal in 1783 and expanding the then-standard five octave range upwards by half an octave, and then downwards by half an octave.

A scene of the Battle of Elixheim, also known as the Passage of the Lines of Brabant, on 18 July 1705 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Grand Alliance army, led by the Duke of Marlborough, successfully broke through the French Lines of Brabant, an arc of defensive fieldworks stretching in a seventy-mile arc from Antwerp to Namur in Belgium.

Elizaveta Petrovna (1709-62), Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death. She led Russia into the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48) and the Seven Years' War (1756-63), and spent vast amounts of money on archectural projects in and around St Petersburg. Part of a series of portraits of European monarchs by Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-88), 'the German Watteau'. Nilson was part of a family of artists and established himself as the leading Augsburg artist of his day, whose influence extended across publishing, art academies, a role as court painter, and the decorative arts (especially ceramics).

Elizabeth's art was well-known and widely published: series of pictures ‘The Birth and Triumph of Cupid’ (1795) was engraved by Tomkins and published at the king's expense, and reissued as ‘The Birth and Triumph of Love’ in 1796. Twenty-four of her sketches, ‘The Power and Progress of Genius’, were issued in 1806. This is a later publication.

Text on reverse in French relating to the Dutch revolt against the rule of Philip II, where Robert Dudley, a close friend of Elizabeth I and champion of the international Protestant cause, led the English campaign in support of the Dutch Revolt from 1585-1587. Elizabeth I (1533-1603); reigned 1558-1603. The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth came to the throne on the death of her half-sister, Mary I. Her long reign, beginning in 1558, saw the secure establishment of the Church of England. It was characterised by relative peace and prosperity, a great increase in foreign trade and exploration, and a flourishing literary culture. Despite receiving many proposals of marriage, Elizabeth remained single and became legendary as the 'virgin queen'. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from design with allegorical elements and verses in French, by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.

Queen Elizabeth, crowned by stars and encircled in clouds, carrying a fan of ostrich feathers. Originally published c.1617 with text above the stars and title (as above) and three lines of verse by John Davies under the image, the plate was cut down, losing the title and text, and used as frontispiece to Camden's 'Annales' of 1630. The original portrait, before trimming of the plate, was the only Jacobean portrait to refer to a privilege, bought by Hilliard for the substantial sum of 13s. 4d. a year.

The title page to an edition of the 'Bishop's Bible', with a roundel portrait of Elizabeth I within an elaborate design featuring allegorical figures of Charity and Faith, the the Royal Arms and a quote from Romans 1:16. The Bishops' Bible is an English edition of the Bible which was produced under the authority of the established Church of England in 1568. Though not formally dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, the Bishops' Bible includes a portrait of the queen on its title page.

From the second volume of Jean-François Le Petit's 'La Grande Chronique Ancienne et Moderne, de Hollande, Zelande, West-Frise, Utrecht, Frise, Overyssel & Groeningen, jusques à la fin de l'An 1600. The English queen was included as she was, according to the sur-title, 'Protectrice de la liberté des Provinces unies du Pays-bas'.

It was characterised by relative peace and prosperity, a great increase in foreign trade and exploration, and a flourishing literary culture. Despite receiving many proposals of marriage, Elizabeth remained single and became legendary as the 'virgin queen'.
