Printed for John Bowles at No.13 in Cornhill, London [n.d., c.1770].
Copper engraving with fine original hand colour, 380 x 545mm. 15 x 21½". Laid on board.
Durdham Down has an impressive view of the winding River Avon and the Welsh mountains in the distance. Along with Clifton Down, it formed 400 acres of grassland on the edge of Bristol up to the Avon Gorge. Whereas Clifton had been bought by the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1686, Durdham was still part of the manorial estate of Henbury in the late 18th century. This was until 1861 when it was purchased for the use of the citizens of Bristol. After and from the plate first published in 1756 by Thomas Smith of Derby ( c.1720 - 1767), father of J.R. Smith.

Portrait of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), after Johann Rottenhammer's copy of Dürer's self-portrait from the Feast of Rose Garlands. The familiarity of Kilian's image is in part a result of the fact that Joachim von Sandrart, used it as the basis for his illustration of Dürer in his book on German artists, the Teutsche Akademie of 1675. Sandrart's biography, which is the first full appreciation of Dürer's life and art to be published in his own country, played a vital role in the growth of the Dürer cult.

A large aquatint view showing Durham Abbey rising above the trees on the banks of the River Wear. The rare view was aquatinted by John William Edy after George Bulteel Fisher (1764-1834) who, having studied under Paul Sandby at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, continued to paint during his military career. As a young lieutenant he served as aide to Prince Edward Augustus (father of Queen Victoria), visiting Canada with him and publishing a rare series 'Six Views in North America' (also engraved by Edy) in 1795-6. The following year Fisher and Edy published six views of Gibraltar. The British Museum have both these sets but we have been unable to trace another example of this print of Durham.

Se vend chez Quenedey rue neuve des Petits Champs No.15 a Paris.
Etching and aquatint with small margins, platemark 250 x 195mm (9¾ x 7¾"). Slightly stained.
Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812), pianist and composer. Born in Cáslav (now part of the Czech Republic), Dussek travelled widely across Europe as a young man. In Paris, he performed before Marie Antoinette and made the acquaintance of Napoleon, before fleeing to England at the time of the French Revolution. He spent eleven years in London working as a piano teacher and giving concerts, appearing with Haydn when the latter visited London. He then lived in Prussia before accepting a position with the politician Talleyrand to spend his final years in France. By Edme Quénedey (1756 - 1830), miniature painter and engraver, who made much use of the physionotrace, a mechanised drawing instrument that could reproduce the outline profile of a portrait. It was invented by Gilles-Louis Chretien, who engraved Quenedey's portraits from 1787 to 1789, in 1786. Chretien and Quenedey founded a very successful portrait studio in Paris together in 1788. Between 1786 - c.1810 there were only two studios in Paris which produced a relatively small number of physionotrace engravings. Consequently very few of these intriguing portraits are preserved today. Because of their origins and the realism physionotrace portraits have, they can be seen as true photo-graphic objects and are therefore classified as a forerunner of photography.
