Wreck of the "Duncan Dunbar" off Las Rocas, Brazil. October, 8th 1865.
[Engraved by T.G. Dutton after J.C. Robinson, Second Officer]
[n.d. c.1865.]
Scarce chromolithograph, laid on card to overlay text underneath. Image 310 x 457mm (12¼ x 18"). Slight damage top left.
The 'Duncan Dunbar' was a clipper built at Sunderland and launched in 1857. In October 1865, on route from London to Sydney with seventy passengers (including thirty-five women and children) and a crew of forty-seven, she ran on to Rocas Shoals off Cape San Roque. Attempts were made to back her off, then float her free by throwing cargo overboard, but by next flood tide she had canted over and filled. At dawn the entire ship's complement landed safely on a small section of the reef which remained above high water, and over the next few days the three boats which remained intact were used to land stores from the wreck. Meanwhile, Captain Swanson, the mate and seven seamen had left in one of the boats to obtain assistance at Pernambuco. They were picked up by the American ship Hayara and dropped near Pernambuco where they obtained help from the British Consul. On 17 October the Royal Mail Packet steamer Oneida sighted the castaways, took them on board and landed at Southampton about three weeks later.

Bruin in his Boat.
Bruin in his Boat. Or_ The Manager in Distress.
J.s Gillray fec.t.
Pub.d June 20th 1806 by H.Humphrey 27 St James's Street.
Coloured etching 385 x 305mm (15 x 12"). Frame measures 530 x 455mm (21 x 18"). Slightly time stained. Unexamined out of frame.
A satirical scene depicting Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, defending himself successfully against impeachment efforts led by Samuel Whitbread. Melville stands confidently on the "Rock of Innocence" under the divine protection of Justice, firing symbolic cannons of "Truth" and "Reason" (named Adam and Plomer) at the sinking warship "The Impeachment", which has already struck the “Rocks of Honor and Justice.” In the foreground, Whitbread is shown as a despairing bear aboard the flimsy brewing vessel "The Vanity-Cooler", patched with failed reports and driven by "Popular Clamour", a broken oar. His cause is portrayed as futile, despite the weak support of fluttering "winds" (Stanhope, Wilberforce, and Derby) trying to steer him to safety. Meanwhile, opposition figures like Sidmouth and Lauderdale flounder in the water, Sidmouth clinging to a goose coop labeled with a scratched-out reference to Charles James Fox and Downing Street, and Lauderdale reaching for a barrel of "East India Roupees." Above, rays from a rising sun labeled "Posterity" form a pyramid with the name "Pitt" at its base.

[Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville] Scotch Harry on his Fast Trotter on a Journey to the North.
Argus [Charles Williams] del.t.
Pub.d April 15th 1805 by C. Knight Lambeth.
Coloured etching. Sheet 235 x 350mm (9¼ x 13¾"). Trimmed within plate on three sides. Some paper toning.
Melvill rides a rough horse with the face of Alexander Trotter, laiden with bags of 'siller' (silver) towards a sign marked 'Castle' by the side of the Tweed, as John Bull blows a trumpet blast marked 'Tenth Report'. The Commissioners of Naval Inquiry had just released a report on a fraud perpetrated by Trotter when he was the navy's paymaster. He had transferred money into his out account at Coutts, investing and loaning the funds at interest, from which he benefited, before returning the money to the navy. This satire suggests that Dundas, who had been Treasurer of the Navy at the time, also benefited. However Melville was acquitted in the trial in the House of Lords.

Eng.d. Publish'd May 15. 1806. by C Knight Lambeth.
Coloured etching. Sheet 340 x 235mm (13¼ x 9¼"). Trimmed to printed border.
Alexander Trotter carrys a kilted Lord Melville on his shoulders, menaced by curling waves, in which is a large foaming tankard of 'Whitbread Entire' and fish with the heads of judges. Although Trotter declares he will be safe, the inference is that Melville is in serious trouble. A satire on the impeachment of Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, for irregular financial dealings as Treasurer of the navy, begun by Samuel Whitbread. Alexander Trotter (1750-1830) was Paymaster to the Navy in 1805, and so involved with the corruption, but was given immunity in return for testifying.
