Sir Francis Drake fuyant de Munich.
(avril 1804)
Etching, 250 x 165mm. 9¾ x 6½".
Sir Francis Drake (1764-1821), English diplomat, appointed Envoy Extraordinary to the Elector Palatine in 1799. Corresponding with French dissidents, some letters containing plans for a revolt on the left bank of the Rhine were intercepted by the French, cauing him much embarrasment. This French satire depicts him as an eagle, fleeing from Munich on the Hamburg road. He carries documents, bottles of ink and a large folio, whilst flies buzz around his head. This print was engraved by E. Jaime who produced the first historical analysis of for French Caricatures originally issued in eighty parts between 1834 and 1835 and then as two volumes in 1838.

Dess. et lith par Draner. (by Renard) Imp. Lemercier & C.ie, r. de Seine 57, Paris.
Publié par Daziaro à Paris. [n.d. c.1860.]
Coloured lithograph with added gum arabic. 439 x 298mm (17¼ x 11¾"). Mint.
A rare foreign image of the game of cricket showing a batsman about to be hit by a cricket ball, by "Draner" Jules Renard (1833-1926). When Renard-Draner was settling in Paris in the mid-19th century, the armies and navies of the world, besides engaging in occasional short wars, were engaging themselves - and most vaingloriously and conspicuously indeed - in the art of display: reviews, parades, the exchange of visits by various branches and units, a mounting elaboration and variety in the design of uniforms and the social standing and activities of those of officer rank. All of these things caught and amused the eye and mind of Draner, and this was what he most happily and most successfully set out to caricature for the diversion and pleasure of all. The chief result of his observation and his artistry was the series of 136 full-colour lithographic plates of high quality published by the firm of Daziaro in Paris and handsomely printed by the renowned establishment of Lemercier. The series was entitled "Types Militaires: Galerie militaire de toutes les nations" Soldiers and sailors of all countries and all ranks are shown with strong humorous emphasis on ludicrous situations and national characteristics, but, it must be emphasised, always with the strictest accuracy in the depiction of uniforms and accoutrements down to the most minor details of button, braid, fringe or feather.
