Doctor Faustus's Coalition Nostrum, or Antipostorem Julep. R. Take ten Pounds of the genuine Flowers of Jacobinism, dissolve them well in three Quarts of rich Aristocratic Cream, the sourer the better...
Austin, Printer, Hertford. [n.d., c.1800.]
Letterpress. Sheet 175 x 140mm, 7 x 5½". Mounted on album paper with ink mss. verse dated 1762.
A 'recipe' for a political coalition, needing "Malt Dust, to disguise the nauseous Flavour". The English who supported the French Revolution during its early stages (or even throughout) were early known as Jacobins. These included the young Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and others prior to their disillusionment with the outbreak of the Reign of Terror. Others, such as William Hazlitt and Thomas Paine, remained idealistic about the Revolution. The conventionalized scrawny, French revolutionary sans-culottes Jacobin, was developed from about 1790 by British satirical artists James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson and George Cruikshank. It was commonly contrasted with the stolid stocky conservative and well-meaning John Bull, dressed like an English country squire.

Doctor Gruel.
Pubd. according to Act of Parlt. Oct 3d. 1771 by MDarly 39 Strand.
Etching, 155 x 105mm. 6 x 4¼".
A standing man in profile with wig and hands folded under his gown. The BM has two impressions, one identified in an old hand as Lord L------n. [Lansdowne?] - William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737 - 1805), Prime Minister and patron of the arts; in the second impression he is identified as Sir Nash Grose (1740 - 1814), Judge. He appears to be wearing a legal wig and gown which would make the identification with Grose more probable. The wig resembles that worn by Serjeants at law. From '24 Caricatures by several ladies, gentlemen, artists, etc.', in an album of caricatures published by Mary Darly dated January 1776. It seems that her husband Matthew made the plates. Numbered 'V.1' upper left and '17' upper right.

[after George, 1st Marquess Townshend.]
[...]1777 by J. Walker No.13 Parliament Street.
Etching with hand colour. Sheet 340 x 230mm (13½ x 9"). Framed. Trimmed within plate, small nick in left edge. Unexamined out of frame.
According to ''The Reminiscences of Henry Angelo'' (1830), this anonymous caricature is by George Townshend and ''was intended, it is said, as a satirical corrective to a certain well-known decrepit Irish physician, whose amours rendered him fairly obnoxious to ridicule''. Field Marshal George Townshend (1724-1807), 1st Marquess Townshend, fought at Dettingen, Culloden and Lauffeld, and received Quebec City's surrender in 1759 after the death of Wolfe. However he was a keen amateur caricaturist, which got him in to trouble on more than one occasion: he offended the Duke of Cumberland during the Jacobite campaign, resulting in Townshend missing out on promotions for many years; and his contempt for Wolfe evident in another caricature led to censure for ridiculing the dead hero. However the BM biography ends: 'Established caricature as an important element in British political satire'.

The heads of a family inspect to see whether the vessels in their cellars 'are well cleans'd, and of good Scent, before the precious Wines are poured into 'em'. Plate from 'Doctrine of Morality...According to the Stock Philosophy', Thomas Mannington Gibbs' translation of the work by Marin le Roy, sieur de Gomberville, republished in 1726 as 'Moral Virtue Delineated'. As the explanation published accompanying the picture (not offered here) explains, the vessels are a metaphor for the human soul, which according to the philosophy espoused in this volume must be cleansed of impurity in order to approach virtue and to become worthy of the gifts bestowed from the heavens.

Published as the act Directs July 10th 1779 by W.m Richardson No.68 High Holborn
Mezzotint. 155 x 115mm (6 x 4½"). Thread margins.
James William Dodd (c.1740-1796), actor. Dodd became a strolling player aged sixteen, and acted in Sheffield, Norfolk and Bath before Garrick recruited him for his Drury Lane company in 1765. Dodd was to remain at Drury Lane for the next thirty years, and while he never challenged Tom King as the principal comedian of the company, he was respected by audiences and colleagues. More problematic was his private life: his indiscretions with Covent Garden actress Mary Bulkley caused scandal and his fledgling attempts at management were jeopardised by his rudeness and attempts to seduce young actresses. Physically Dodd was very small, and described as having a 'white, calf-like stupid face'. Engraved after a painting by draughtsman and singer Robert Dighton (1751-1814) by the mezzotint engraver and printseller Robert Laurie (1755?-1836). Music, instruments and mask (representing theatre) in title area.
