Engraved by Henry Meyer from a Picture by Wright of Derby.
London, Richard Bentley, 1844.
Stipple engraving, sheet 225 x 145mm (9 x 5½"). Slight foxing; trimmed inside platemark on three sides.
Thomas Day (1748-89), author and political campaigner. Day was part of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, and his research included adopting two girls from foundling hospitals and trying to educate (in accordance with Rousseau's ideas) one of them into becoming a suitable wife. The project was unsuccessful, but one of the women, Sabrina Sidney, later married Day's friend John Bicknell. With Bicknell, Day wrote the best-selling narrative poem 'The Dying Negro', which told the story of a runaway slave. Day supported American independence and his poem 'The Devoted Legions' (1776) was a scathing indictment of the British government's actions. Day also made an astonishing reputation as a writer of instructive children's fiction such as 'The History of Little Jack' (1787). Day and his wife Esther resided at Anningsley in Surrey from 1783, which they ran primarily as a philanthropic concern. With the welfare of its workers the principal concern, the Days laboured to 'create a new Jerusalem', a quixotic project typical of this 'holder and practitioner of strange ideas...a strange bundle of contradictions' (DNB). Engraved after a portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby (National Portrait Gallery), which had itself been commissioned by Day's friend Richard Lovell Edgeworth and was intended to portray Day as a 'man of feeling'. London June 1st. 1892. Published by Fairless & Beeforth. 128, New Bond Street, W. Copyright Registered.
A mixed-method engraving. Signed artist's proof. 673 x 458mm. 26½ x 18". Uncut. Mint.
Edwin Long (1829-1891) was born in Bath, had an early and precocious talent for drawing, studied at the RA Schools from 1849, and also was a student under John Phillip, who encouraged him to travel. in 1874 he visited Egypt and Syria, and this was the start of his career as an Orientalist painter. He developed a rich, exotic style, strong in detail and often on canvases of large size, allowing him to show long processions, enormous palaces or sweeps of mountains on an epic scale. His best years were in the 1870s-80s, when he was a popular, successful artist specialising in biblical stories and life in ancient Egypt. He became ARA in 1876 and RA in 1881. Fairless and Beeforth commissioned the trilogy of paintings taken from Judges xi, 30-40, where Jepthah's Vow is recorded. This picture with The Martyr and the Return [see ref:14087 & 14094] make the trilogy.

The Duke de Berry was murdered by the Louis Pierre Louvel (c.1783-1820). It was 13th February 1820 as he left the opera house in Paris that Louvel stabbed and mortally wounded him. Louvel was tried and sentenced to death and guillotined a day later on 7 June 1820. M. Ant. De Dominis Com. Pal.. Archiep. Spalat. Dalm. Et Croat. Primas.
Joannes Bill excud. [London, n.d., c.1620.]
Rare engraving. Sheet: 280 x 185mm (11 x 7¼"). Trimmed within plate, mounted in album paper.
Marco Antonio de Dominis (1560-1624), former Archbishop of Split and Primate of Dalmatia and all Croatia, frontispiece to his ''De Republicâ Ecclesiasticâ contra Primatum Papæ''. Perhaps engraved by Renold Elstracke. Having sided with Venice in a row with the Papacy, he resigned his position and travelled to England to avoid the Inquisition. There he wrote ''De Republicâ Ecclesiasticâ'', anti-Roman sermons, two volumes of which were published in London by John Bill with royal patronage, the first in 1617 and a second in 1620; a third was published in Hanau in 1622. In 1623 he recanted and returned to Rome, but soon he erred and was declared a relapsed heretic and was confined to the Castel Sant'Angelo where he died 1624. With Bill's name on the plate, this is likely to be from the 1620 second volume of the ''De Republicâ Ecclesiasticâ''.
