[View of the Temple of Apollo at Corinth.]
[View of the Temple of Apollo at Corinth.]
J. Steuart, delin.t. Lerpiniere Sculp.t.
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraving. 360 x 510mm, 14 x 20". Trimmed to plate at top, large margins on 3 sides..
A view of the exterior of the Temple of Apollo, Corinth, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Stuart (1713–88) and Revett (1720–1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'.
Stuart's gouache of the temple is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, RIBA Library Drawings Collection, SD146/2.

Angelica Kauffman R.A. pinx.t [...] Fran.s Bartolozzi R.A. Sculp.t.
London, Publish'd Nov.r 3 1785 by Ja.s Birchall No. 473 Strand.
Very fine stipple, printed in brown. 420 x 490mm (16½ x 19¼"). Trimmed to platemark bottom & top edge. Small margin at sides.
Scene from Act 5, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's tragedy 'Coriolanus'. Stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after Angelica Kauffman. Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case, getting around the rules by electing Bartolozzi as a painter). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton enticed Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal.

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805). As one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence, his surrender at the Siege of Yorktown (1781) effectively ended hostilities in North America. He later became Governor-General of India (1786-1793), and won renown for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India. Later, as Master of the Ordnance he played a key role in overseeing what is now the Ordnance Survey.

[n.d. c.1770.]
Etching, with large margins. Plate 140 x 102mm. 5½ x 4". Very fine impression.
Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, KG (1738-1805) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. In the United States and Britain, he is best remembered as one of the leading generals in the American War of Independence. His 1781 surrender to a combined American-French force at the Siege of Yorktown is often incorrectly considered the end of the war; in fact, it continued for a further two years. Despite this defeat, he retained the confidence of successive British governments and continued to enjoy an active career. In India, where he served two terms as governor general, he is remembered for promulgating the Permanent Settlement. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, he argued for Catholic emancipation and oversaw the response to the 1798 Irish Rebellion and a French invasion of Ireland.

A 8' statue of Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805), dressed as a Roman soldier, standing on a pedestal flanked by figures of Fortitude & Prudence. Commissioned by the residents of Calcutta, designed by John Bacon senior and completed by his son John Bacon junior, it is now in the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, India. Governor-General of India (1786-1793), Charles Cornwallis became famous for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India.

Painted by H.D. Hamilton. Engraved by F. Bartolozzi.
London. Publish'd March 15th. 1781, for Watson & Dickinson No. 158, New Bond Street.
Etching with stipple in red ink, fine proof before title, sheet 170 x 175mm. 6¾ x 7". Trimmed to plate at top and bottom.
Portrait in an oval of Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, KG (1738- 1805), British Army officer and colonial administrator. After Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1736 - 1808).
