William Walter Burgess [1844 - 1908] annually exhibited his etchings at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1903. Burgess was a full member of the Royal Engravers and such major museums as The British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include his etchings in their permanent collections. The Fetter Lane Moravian Church, the King's Road, Chelsea, London. It was founded in 1742 by members of the Church who had come to London in search of passage of the British colonies in the Caribbean in order to take the Gospel to the slave communities. In 1831 Charles Random de Berenger, self-styled Baron de Beaufain & Baron de Berenger, turned Cremorne House and grounds into a National Club for athletics, known as the Stadium. Unprofitable, in the 1840s it was changed into a pleasure gardens, with mock tournaments, pony races, banqueting halls, theatre, an American-style bowling saloon, and staged circus acts, balloon ascents and firework displays. It was De Berenger who had instigated the 'Great Stock Exchange Fraud' of 1814, which resulted in Admiral Thomas Cochrane's disgrace, keeping him out of the Royal Navy from 1814-32. [&] Dr Richard Mead (1673-1754) physician to George I, George II, Sir Isaac Newton and Robert Walpole. He encouraged the introduction of inoculation against the smallpox and was a great philanthropist and one of the first governors of the Foundling Hospital. He was also an unrivalled collector, whose old master paintings and ancient sculpture were available for study at his house in Great Ormond Street.

Cremorne Gardens, Lots Road SW10 are named for Thomas Dawson, 1st Viscount Cremorne (1725 - 1813); this portrait is by Charles Knight after Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769 - 1830). Lord Cremorne bought Chelsea Farm, the house depicted below his portrait, in 1778. In 1831 it was purchased by Charles Random De Berenger, Baron De Beaufain who turned it first into a sports club and then opened the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens. Entertainment included concerts, fireworks, balloon ascents and galas. After its closure, the gardens were sold for building and soon built over.

Two veterans of the French Revolutionary Wars, both still in army uniform, compare notes about their loss of limbs with two older Chelsea Pensioners, also amputees. One of the Old Guard says 'a Rascal of a Frenchman shot my nose off', during his service with the Marquis of Grandby during the Seven Years' War. 'Giles Grinagain' was probably a pseudonym of Samuel Howitt, the publisher of the print.

The key lists the variant uniforms of the old soldiers. The extensive list of subscribers include the Duke of Wellington, the artist and Francis Moon, one of the publishers.

Amateur watercolour drawing, unsigned, captioned 'In Chelsea Church Yard' below, together with an engraved illustration to a periodical. The two tipped into a single album leaf, sheet 330 x 480mm, 13 x 18¾".
Philip Miller FRS was a Scottish botanist and head gardener at the Chelsea Physic Garden from 1722 until he was pressured to retire shortly before his death. He wrote The Gardener's and Florists Dictionary or a Complete System of Horticulture (1724) and The Gardener's Dictionary containing the Methods of Cultivating and Improving the Kitchen Fruit and Flower Garden, which first appeared in 1731 in an impressive folio and passed through eight expanding editions in his lifetime and was translated to Dutch by Job Baster. In 1815 the members of the Linnæan and Horticultural Societies raised this monument to his memory in the churchyard of Chelsea Old Church, where he was buried.

Ranelagh Gardens, adjoining the Wren's Pensioner's Hospital, became popular as a place to escape the city and take in the cleaner air in Chelsea. Balls, concerts, dinners and of course gossip were shared here almost daily. It quickly exceeded Vauxhall in popularity, but its popularity waned until the season of 1804 when the fashionable set abandoned it entirely.

A bird's eye view of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, with the river in the foreground and the formal gardens between the river and the hospital. The Westbourne can be seen entering the Thames. This is an early example, before the addition of Joseph Smith's publication line in 1724. The hospital was founded by King Charles II in 1682, however Sir Stephen Fox (1627-1716), to whom this print is dedicated, was the inspiration for its foundation. Fox was a royal administrator and courtier to Charles II and a politician who rose from humble origins, so much so that he became known as 'the richest commoner in the three kingdoms'.

St Mark's College, which was established in 1841 by the National Society. The first principal was Derwent Coleridge (son of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge). Students were between 14 and 17 years olds, and were placed on three months of probation before being apprenticed to the National Society until they were 21. In 1923 St John's College and St Mark's were amalgamated to form one single college based in Chelsea, until later in 1973 they were moved to Plymouth.

The Chelsea Waterworks Company was formed in 1723 and supplied water to Westminster and adjacent parts. It introduced the first iron main in London in 1746. The company held water in reservoirs in Hyde Park and Green Park and pumped water through an elaborate sysstems of canals which covered a large area of today's Pimlico. As the years marched by the water was becoming more and more contaminated and the Company installed the first Sand filtration operation to purify the water. Eventurally in the late nineteenth century the company became part of the Metropolitan Water Board. Longford: 645. the location of the water works is shown in Rocque's map of Chelsea, ref. 18215. In 1840 a meeting was held of Cheltenham residents who decided to set up a 'Proprietary Grammar School'. G.S. Harcourt and J.S. Iredell, founded the Cheltenham College in 1841 to educate the sons of gentleman. Within two years it was relocated to the site seen here, and soon became known simply as Cheltenham College.

A pair depicting the exterior and interior of John Scott's Racing Stables in Cheltenham. The equestrian ‘palace' was built at a time when innovation in the keeping and treatment of horses was a popular Loose boxes were build around tall glass belvederes rising high up above the roofs to let in as much light as possible as shown.
