The President's Lodge, dating from the 1460s, is the only substantial half-timbered building remaining in Cambridge and is Grade 1 listed. Sydney Robert Fleming Jones (1881-1961) was a notable watercolourist and etcher, particularly of architectural views; he also wrote several books on the English countryside and provided illustrations for several publications including The Times, Illustrated London News and The Studio.

It was designed by the architect and college head Sir James Burrough (1691-1764), the president of Caius College for many years who acted as an architectural adviser in Cambridge, designing new buildings and updating facades of medieval colleges. Burrough worked on the interior of the Elizabethan Sidney Sussex buildings between 1749 and 1752. For Ackermann's 'History of Cambridge'.

The Front Gate of St John's College, Cambridge, was completed in 1516. The carving is of the coat of arms of the Foundress, Lady Margaret Beaufort. The curious beasts on either side are yales, mythical animals having elephants' tails, antelopes' bodies and goats' heads, with horns. Above is a statue of St. John the Evangelist: at his feet is an eagle, the traditional symbol of the Saint. He holds a poisoned chalice, with a snake representing the legend that he charmed the poison out in the form of a serpent and then drank safely. The tower was built by William Swayne, the master mason who was also employed at King's College Chapel; here he produced a fine fan vault on a much smaller scale. The heavy wooden gates date from 1665, and have traditional linen-fold panels.

[Cambridge. St. John's College, Bridge of Sighs.] 58. [The Bridge of Sighs connects the main buildings of St. John's College to the new court. It was designed by Thomas Rickman, an interesting man who started life as a grocer. The date of the building is early nineteenth century. The design of the structure was suggested by the Bridge of Sighs at Venice, which has sometimes given rise to unkind comparisons. It is certainly less graceful than Wren's bridge further down the river, but it nevertheless has charm and distinction. It is a single span, covered over, which gives it the appearance of a cloister; the sides are pierced with open perpendicular windows, the gratings being intended to prevent any nocturnal escape from the College. Only one under-graduate is known to have managed to squeeze between the bars.]

[Cambridge. St. John's College, Gateway.] 55. [The building of this College was commenced in 1516 by John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester and Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. Fisher is one of the most renowned of all Cambridge men, being noted fro his charity to all men and particularly to the sick and destitute. His firm refusal to recognise Henry's divorce led to his arrest and execution in 1535. Thw tower which today forms the main entrance to the College is a delightful example of what may be achieved by the skillful use of red brick. The groining is of stone, as are also the elaborate decorations. In the centre a richly canopied niche contains the statue of St. John the Evangelist, holding his usual emblems, the chalice and serpent, and at his feet is the evangelist's symbol, the eagle. This statue was set up in 1662, and immediately above the gate is to be seen Lady Margaret's shield, the three lions of England and the three lilies of France, surmounted by two yales, beasts that in the zoology of heralds form the sub-species of the antelope.]

A view of St. John's from the river Cam. Alfred J Bennett (1861 - 1923) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolour and etching. He worked as a jeweller whilst also regularly submitting paintings to the Royal Academy of which four were exhibited between 1861-1880. After this success, Bennett left the jewellery trade to concentrate on his art. Bennett exhibited extensively, regularly contributing work to the Royal Watercolour Society and British Institution exhibitions, the RA, Walker's Gallery in New Bond Street, Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, Grosvenor Gallery, International Society, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
