William Black (1749-1829), doctor, author and poet. His 'An Arithmetical and Medical Analysis of the Diseases and Mortality of the Human Species', 1789, argued that statistics might be of use in medicine. It is likely that this portrait was published in a review of that work.

Joseph Jérôme Lefrançois de Lalande (1732-1807), a French astronomer whose staff nearly discovered Neptune in 1795: the planet was noted but not followed up. However, when the planet was discovered in 1846, Lalande's records helped plot Neptune's orbit. Published in the 'European Magazine'. See item ref: 29787 for a better impression.
