A portrait of Arthur O'Connor (1763-1852) in French military uniform. After becoming a member of the Society of United Irishmen in 1796, O'Connor was captured during an attempt to reach France to petition for support for an Irish revolution. After a period in prison he was sent into exile in 1802, and was welcomed in Paris by Napoleon, who made him a General of Division in the French army, as illustrated here. In 1804 he went to Brest to join an expeditionary army intended for the invasion of Ireland, but when the plan fell through he retired from the army, although he offered his services to Napoleon during the Hundred Days.
