Kew Gardens originated in the exotic garden at Kew Park formed by Lord Capel John of Tewkesbury. It was enlarged and extended by Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales, the widow of Frederick, Prince of Wales, for whom Sir William Chambers built several garden structures. One of these, the lofty Chinese pagoda built in 1761 still remains. From Chambers's 'Plans, elevations, sections and perspective views of the gardens and buildings at Kew...' Frontis etched dedication page to the folio 'Eight Views of Windsor Great Park' by Thomas Sandby (1723 - 1798). Plate 340 x 330mm, 13½ x 13". Some small nicks and tears around the edges. Large margins.
The engravings in the folio are likely to date from 1754-5 and to have been available by private subscription. They were reissued by Boydell in 1772. On the evidence of surviving compositional studies it may be deduced that Paul Sandby (1725 - 1809) was responsible for the figures, and Thomas for the panoramic landscapes.

They are being guided by his brother, William, Duke of Cumberland, who was Ranger of the Park. From the folio 'Eight Views of Windsor Great Park' by Thomas Sandby (1723-98), engraved by his younger brother Paul (1731-1809). Thomas Sandby had been private secretary and draughtsman to Cimberland since 1743, and when Cumberland was made Ranger Thomas was made his deputy and invited Paul to live with him. While Thomas laid out improvements to the Park, including the creation of Virginia Water from a stream, he drew these eight scenes which Paul then engraved. In this case examination of the preparatory drawing (now in the British Museum) has led experts to believe Paul drew the figures. The series was reissued by Boydell in 1772 with his address added.
