Very rare mezzotint. 180 x 150mm (7 x 6"). Trimmed close to plate.
Three allegorical female figures in clouds. Faith is kneeling on the left and holding a Cross and Chalice; Hope is in the centre with her hands crossed over her breast, looking up into rays of light streaming from above, and Charity sits on the right with two infants. The Virgin Mary with infant Christ plucking grapes. Engraved after Johann Rottenhammer and Jan Breughel who often worked in collaboration, with Rottenhammer providing figures for Breughel's landscapes. Engraved by William Baillie (1723-1810). Baillie retired from the army in 1761 with the rank of Captain and thereafter devoted himself to printmaking and dealing. He specialised in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques.
