Queen Anne (1665-1714) was the second daughter of James II and she married Prince George of Denmark in 1683. She was intimate and dependent on Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, whose husband, the Duke, controlled the war against France. However, in 1711, she dismissed the Marlboroughs, largely because of her sympathy with Tory opposition to the Duke's conduct of the war. The most important constitutional landmark of her reign was the Act of Union with Scotland in 1707.

Queen Anne (1665-1714) ascended the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702. She favoured moderate Tory politicians, who shared her Anglican religious views over their opponents, the Whigs. The Whigs however grew more powerful during the course of the War of the Spanish Succession, until in 1710 Anne dismissed many of them from office. Despite many pregnancies, Anne died without surviving children and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart.

George Byng Lord Torrinton.
George Byng Lord Torrinton. In the Collection of the Right Hon: the Lord Visc.t Torrington
G. Kneller pinxit. J. Houbraken sculps. Amst. 1747
Impensis J & P Knapton Londini 1747.
Fine engraving, plate 350 x 215mm (13½ x 8½"), with margins. Glued to album sheet. One small crease.
Bust portrait of George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington (1663-1733), in an architectural oval with draped curtain beyond; a seascape with a seabattle in a cartouche below; a mythical sea creature in lower left. He wears a long wig and neckerchief. From the series Birch's heads. In the mid-eighteenth century, the British historian Thomas Birch (1705 – 1766) published a series of short biographies of famous figures from his nation’s past. Accompanying each of the 108 biographies was an engraved portrait of the subject, whose likeness was presented within an elaborate decorative setting. These ornamental frames were designed by Hubert-François Bourguignon (1699 – 1773)—commonly known as Gravelot—a Parisian artist then working in London. After finishing the drawing, Gravelot sent sheets to Amsterdam. There, the Dutch printmaker Jacob Houbraken (1698 – 1780) created the final image by combining Gravelot’s design with portraits. Byng was one of the young army officers who supported William III's accession; 1691, transferred to the navy; 1704, played an important part in the capture of Gibraltar, which resulted in a knighthood; August 1718, decisive victory against the Spanish off Cape Passaro, Sicily; 1721, he was raised to the peerage with the title Baron Byng of Southill; 1725, created Viscount Torrington; 1727, first lord of the Admiralty.

Looking towards the viewer, wearing robes trimmed with fur, a broad white fur collar, plain white cravat, cape tied to left shoulder with a large bow, and long wig. Below a crest with the motto 'Loyal Devior'. Carteret was appointed ambassador-extraordinary to Sweden in 1719, a position in which he triumphed by rescuing the Swedes (facing disaster following the death of Charles XII) from domination by Russia. During his absence, however, the rise of Robert Walpole resulted in Carteret's being sidelined through a transfer to the lord lieutenancy of Ireland. Carteret's opposition to Walpole was a leitmotif of his career.
