An impressive image of two greyhounds, in fine colour. The Waterloo Cup was the biggest annual hare coursing event in the United Kingdom and was often referred to by its supporters as the blue riband event of the coursing year. Run as a knock-out tournament between sixty four coursing greyhounds from Great Britain and Ireland, the three day event was run annually at Great Altcar in Lancashire, from 1836 to 2005 and used to attract tens of thousands of spectators to watch and gamble on the coursing matches.

14 of 24 coloured aquatint engravings of race horses on 7 leaves in fine contemporary full red morocco gilt, illustrated with horse vignettes in gilt front and back covers and gilt edging 217 x 140mm. Each image 95 x 67mm. 2 blank leaves. Title page missing. Binding generally rubbed, extremities worn. Foxing and staining to plates.
There would have originally been 24 plates (depicting the winners of the 3 races over 8 years) in the volume published by Rock Brothers & Payne in 1849, though Siltzer and Lane record only 22.

As written on the text sheet "a quarrel that took place between the natives of an island situated off the south point of Mindanao, and the crew of the Waaksamkeyd transport, on board of which were embarked the officers and company of his Majesty's late ship Sirius. The vessel wore Dutch colours, because the natives were known to be in the interest of the Dutch, as appeared by the Rajah's boat wearing the flag of that nation". This engraving was published in the 'Naval Chronicle'. Gold was the founder and publisher.

The plates include views of Rideau Falls, Views from Barrack Hill, Chaudiere Falls etc. Some plates such as 'View of Locks' drawn on stone by well-known American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910), his work in this series was his earliest illustration work.
