Mrs Abington
Sr. Jos. Reynolds Pinx J. Wilson fec
[n.d., c.1770]
Mezzotint, platemark 150 x 115mm (6 x 4½").
Frances Abington (1737-1815), actress. Born in lowly circumstances, Abington grew up in the slums around Drury Lane, and sold flowers and sang in Covent Garden as a girl. Along with other jobs she did when young (kitchenmaid, milliner's assistant), various accounts of her life hint at prostitution during her early years. After making a start as an actress in London her first professional success came while working in Dublin, rejoining Garrick's Drury Lane company where she established herself as one of the leading comedy actresses of her generation. She was also the mistress of at least two prominent figures. Engraving after the several portrait 'Mrs Abington as the Comic Muse' by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1764-8, hair and dress repainted 1772-3) now in Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This was one of several portraits that Reynolds painted of Abington- he was an admirer and purchased twelve tickets for her benefit performance in 1772. Reynolds' portrait was a companion to his portrait of Sarah Siddons as 'the Tragic Muse'. CS: 2. Not in Hamilton.

Illustrations of a Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris), a Yellow Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia flava) and a Hooded Pitcher Plant, all native to the south-east USA. The plate was drawn and engraved by Mark Catesby (1683-1749) for his 'Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands', the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America. Catesby learned to etch so that he had control over the creation of the plates, signing them with a monogram 'MC' with an inverted C for the left sweep of the M. Mark Catesby (24 March 1683 – 23 December 1749) was an English naturalist who studied the flora and fauna of the New World.

[A Ceiling design.]
C.P.R [con real privilegio].
[French, n.d., c.1680.]
Rare engraving, irregular plate, at most 320 x 630mm (12½ x 24¾"). Bottom corners of plate snipped, outside image area. Centre fold. Evidence of damage to the printing plate, with re-engraving.
Possibly a ceiling design with a classical scene, rather than a fan. A naked woman reclines in a bower, surrounded by animals and birds including a lion, boar, lobster and ostrich. Above three cherubs hold aloft a garland of flowers; to the left is a rider carring a spear; to the right are windheads. The re-engraving is simpler: no attempt has been made to reintroduce a trumpeter, leaving a disembodied horn.
