A portrait of Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford (1776 - 1849). Acheson was a British politician who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada and Governor General of British North America in the 19th century. In 1835, he became Governor General of British North America and instructed to appease the reformists, led by Louis-Joseph Papineau, without giving them any real power. The following year Lord Gosford learned of the planned Lower Canada Rebellion and had many of Papineau's followers arrested, although Papineau himself escaped to the United States. The next month, he issued a reward for the capture of Papineau, and declared martial law in Lower Canada.

A seated portrait of John Adam (1779-1825), administrator of the East India Comapny in India. He became a member of the Supreme Council of India in 1819 and was Acting Governor General of India for seven months in 1823 between the depature of Hastings and the arrival of Amherst. During that time he moved to suppress the freedom of the Press, cancelling James Silk Buckingham's license for residence in India and passing regulations restricting newspaper criticism.

A 'John Paul Addenbrooke' was a major in the 54th: his dates are 1753-1821) and his career included being Gentleman Usher to Queen Charlotte & Equerry to Princess Charlotte.

Prince Adolphus (1774-1850), Duke of Cambridge. Son of George III, he went to Hanover in 1791 to receive military training under the supervision of the Hannoverian commander Field Marshal von Freytag, fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession. The pair were briefly captured before the Battle of Hondschoote, in which 40,000 Frenchmen defeated 24,000 British and Hanoverian soldiers, capturing 6 flags and all of the Duke of York's artillery.

Mezzotint, very rare open letter title, 610 x 430mm. 24 x 17". Margin with tears, one just into plate at right.
The widow Agrippina, seated, mourns with her head resting against an urn inscribed with her husband Germanicus's name, comforted by one of her daughters, who touches her neck. A naked boy stands at her feet, leaning back with his hand on his brother's head; behind two young women stand, their arms around each other. A young man beside them buries his head in his hands, another son at the left bows his head; a crown, laurels and a statue of an eagle in the right foreground. In 5 AD Agrippina married Germanicus, her second cousin and step-grandson of the Emperor Augustus. Agrippina had nine children by Germanicus, including the future emperor Gaius (Caligula). Agrippina was very popular among the Roman people, not least because of her marriage to the much-loved Germanicus, whose ashes she brought back to Rome after his death in the east in AD 21. Her strength and popularity aroused the suspicions of the emperor Tiberius and his right-hand man Sejanus, head of the Praetorian guards and she and her eldest son were banished to the Pontian islands on the Bay of Naples in AD 29. Four years later, following a beating so severe that she was blinded in one eye, Agrippina starved herself to death. Her popularity, however, ensured a decent burial, and she was laid to rest at Rome in the Mausoleum of Augustus After Benjamin West (1738 - 1820).

Towards the end of his careet he needed a substitute not only to run for him when batting but also to field. Despite his lack of skill he was very popular. Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), London painter of Greek and Roman settings, etcher, stage designer and decorative artist was born in January 1836. Shown in his studio holding palette and brushes, an unfinished canvas behind him. After training in Antwerp, Alma-Tadema moved to London in 1870 and became a member of the Royal Academy in 1879. He was knighted in 1899. After the portrait by John Collier (1850-1934), portrait painter who received guidance and encouragement from Alma-Tadema as a young artist. The print was originally sold as a companion to a portrait of another 19th century artist, Rosa Bonheur.

The Tower of William Tell at Altorf.

Rare lithograph. Printed area 140 x 140mm (5½ x 5½"). Foxing around edges.
The 13th century tower in the market place at Altdorf, Switzerland, where according to legend William Tell shot an apple from his son's head. In 1895 a memorial statue was erected in front of the tower. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

Joseph Ames (bap. 1687-d.1759), bibliographer and antiquary. A fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and member of the Royal Society, Ames wrote a history of printing in England ('Typographical antiquities', 1749) and formed a 'museum' of title-pages and stray leaves a specimens of early printing. He also had a large collection of engraved portraits, which he compiled for his 'Catalogue of English Heads', and a coin collection. This portrait, which illustrated the second edition of the 'Typographical Antiquities' in 1785, shows Ames, quill in hand, with his library behind him and a copy of 'Typographical Antiquities' open beside him.

Her support of the union contributed significantly to its acceptance by both kingdoms, while her staunch support of the duke of Marlborough in the face of opposition made it possible for him to use his skills to re-establish the balance of power in Europe. Engraved and published after Kneller's portrait, by the Amsterdam-based printmaker Pieter van Gunst.

Anne of Cleves (1515-1557) was a German noblewoman and the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and as such she was Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. When her health began to fail, Anne was allowed by Mary I to live at Chelsea Old Manor, and later died on 16 July 1557. She also has the distinction of being the last of Henry's wives to die.
