William Anderson (1803-58) in Afghan dress. Promoted to captain in 1838, he served as Commandant of Shah Shuja's 2nd Cavalry during the 1st Afghan War (1838-42) and was taken prisoner during the retreat from Kabul in January 1842, and released on 22 September. Promoted to major in May 1853, Anderson later served as second-in-command of the Jodhpur Legion, a unit that mutinied in 1857, before eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. A portrait from Vincent Eyre's 'Portraits of the Cabul Prisoners', from an original drawing made during Eyre's captivity in Afghanistan after the Retreat from Kabul during the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842).

Robert Boyle (1627-1691) the natural philospher, chemist, physicist and inventor; his book 'The Sceptical Chymist' is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry, and as one of the founders of modern chemisty he is known for his 'Boyle's Law'. One of a number of stipple heads for the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature' by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810.

Elizabeth Canning (1734-73), an 18-year-old London maidservant, claimed to have been kidnapped on New Year's Day and held for a month in a brothel in Enfield. She accused `Mother Wells', the madam of the establishment, of trying to force her to become a prostitute. A hideous gypsy crone staying in the house, Mary Squires, cut off the girl's stays (worth 10 shillings), and Elizabeth was imprisoned in an attic with only a few crusts of bread and a jug of water to live on. On January 29th she escaped through a window and walked all the way back to her mother's house in the City. Squires and Wells were apprehended, and tried at the Old Bailey; the former was condemned to be hanged, and the latter was burned in the hand and imprisoned. However opinion turned against Canning and new evidence led her to be charged with perjury and transported for seven years.

Carl X Gustav (1622-60), King of Sweden. He was in fact only the fourth King Carl: Carl IX ((1604-11) had read a fictitious history of Sweden before choosing his numeral. The publisher Peter Stent died of the plague in 1665; his widow sold his business to John Overton. Stent also published a reversed version of this portrait with the same date, title and wreath decorations.

Thomas Carr was vestry clerk of the parish of St Paul, Covent Garden. He and Elizabeth Adams (with whom he lived) stole ninety-three guineas and a diamond ring from William Quarrington. At Tyburn the pair kissed and held hands as the cart moved away from under their feet.

A copy of Hollar's etched portrait of Christina (1626-69), Queen of Sweden, remembered as one of the most learned women of the 17th century. The publisher Peter Stent died of the plague in 1665; his widow sold his business to John Overton. William Cundell and John Smith were among a group of British sailors captured by the French on Mauritius. During their captivity about fifty collaborated with their captors, acting as prison guards. When the British recaptured the island most of the collaborators left with the French; of the remainder most were transported but only Cundell and Smith were sentenced to be hanged, having been chosen by lot. They were hung on the roof of Horsemonger Lane Gaol (today a public park, Newington Gardens), the last public execution for high treason in Britain.

Robert Estienne (1503-59), latinised as Robertus Stephanus, a classical scholar and printer of Paris. As a Protestant convert, some of his religious texts fell foul of Catholic theologians of the Sorbonne. Threatened with censorship he fled to Geneva, where he published many works by Calvin. In Paris he employed punch-cutter Claude Garamond, for whom the typeface 'Garamond' is named.

A scene of the hanging, drawing and quartering of 'conspirators against the person of the king of England', probably the Monmouth rebels of 1685, against James II. From the offset on the reverse, this is likely to have been published in the 'Europische Mercurius', a Dutch newspaper. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688 any adverse view of James was widely disseminated.

A copy of the first mezzotint to be published in England, which had been engraved by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who introduced the technique to England when he returned with the Restoration in 1660. Rupert demonstrated the process to associates, including John Evelyn, who persuaded Rupert to contribute this portrait to his history of printmaking, 'Sculpura', in 1662. According to Chaloner Smith this version was engraved for the second edition of 'Sculpura'.

He fled to Plymouth, where he was on a ship bound for New York when he was apprehended. Found guitly, he was executed by famed hangman John Foxton at Newgate in December.

Quirinus Kuhlmann (1651-89), German Baroque poet and mystic. His poetry was initially successful, but his political and religious views were too extreme. He believed that Protestant Europe should join with the Ottomans to destroy Catholic Europe, the House of Habsburg, and the Pope, thus establishing the ''Kingdom of Jesus''. In 1689 he travelled to Moscow to convince Tsar Ivan V to join this alliance; while living in the city he was denounced by the chief pastor of Moscow Lutherans as theologically and politically dangerous, arrested, tortured, and burned at the stake for heresy.

Richard Lower (1631 -91), a physician who tended to Charles II during his last illness and to Princess Anne during her pregnancy. He heavily influenced the development of medical science: he was the first to see the difference between arterial and venous blood and experimented with transfusion, including from sheep to a man.

In 1751 John and Ruth Osbourne were seized from a workhouse in Tring and accused of witchcraft. Both were ducked in a pond in Wilstone, but one of the leaders, Thomas Colley, held Ruth down with a stick until she drowned. Colley was convicted of murder and hanged in chains at Gubblecote Cross. He was a Tottenham publican and a property developer who organised his considerable activities around his cricket, turning out for Essex regularly from 1896 to 1926. His total of 496 County Championship matches for Essex is a record for an amateur player in English cricket. François-André Danican Philidor (1726-95), French composer regarded as the best chess player of his day. His 'Analyse du jeu des Échecs', for which this probably a frontispiece portrait of an English edition, was considered a standard chess manual for at least a century.

George Psalmanazar The Imposter.

George Psalmanazar (c.1679-1763), a Frenchman, passed himself off as the first visitor to Europe from Taiwan, even speaking an invented language. He assumed the name of 'George Psalmanazar' when he 'converted' to Christianity in 1702. Coming to London, he switched to Anglicanism and wrote ''An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, an Island subject to the Emperor of Japan'' in 1704. After confessing the imposture in 1706 he went straight, learning Hebrew and co-authoring Samuel Palmer's 'A General History of Printing' (1732). He even contributed to A Complete System of Geography and wrote about the real conditions in Formosa, pointedly criticising the hoax he himself had perpetrated. In later life he became a friend of Samuel Johnson and wrote his autobiography, although even this did not reveal his real name.

John Rainolds (or Reynolds, 1549-1607), Puritan theologian. At the Hampton Court Conference (1604) his request that ''one only translation of the Bible [be] declared authentical, and read in the church'' led to the creation of the King James Bible.

A half portrait in an oval of Martha Ray (1742-79), a singer who was the mistress of John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, by whom she had nine children. On 7th April, a jealous admirer, James Hackman, murdered her at the Royal Opera House, for which he was executed at Tyburn.

Charles Rennett. Convicted at the Old Bailey of May 28th 1819 of Child Stealing.
Published by R. Ackermann June 1st 1819.
Rare lithograph. Sheet 290 x 205mm (11½ x 8") very large margins. Slight soiling.
By sweet-talking a nursery-servant, Rennett kidnapped the three-year-old son of his first cousin, who had inherited an estate that Rennett felt should have been his. He absconded to Germany, where he was apprehended and brought back to England. Found guilty, Rennett was sentenced to seven years' transportation to Australia.

A bust portrait in profile to the right of Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, within a trompe l'oeil oval. Below the portrait is a depiction of Rousseau's tomb. He was initially buried at Ermenonville on the 'Ile des Peupliers' as shown, which became a place of pilgrimage for his many admirers, before being moved to the Panthéon in 1794.
