[Charles Williams]
Pubd Septr 1st 1814 by W, N, Jones N.o 5 Newgate Street.
Etching with fine hand-coloured aquatint, sheet 215 x 530mm (8½ x 20¾"). Trimmed within plate. Damaged. Loss and tear bottom right.
Plate from the 'Scourge', viii. 161. A sequence of three designs mocking the prophecies and followers of Joanna Southcott (1750–1814), who claimed to receive divine revelations and attracted a large following in the early 19th century. ‘The Summons to Paradise’. A man, woman and child look from a first-floor window as a man draped in a sheet and riding a braying, rose-wreathed ass declares himself the “holy angel” sent by Johanna Southcott to conduct the woman to heaven. Her husband looks on in confusion, while she joyfully believes the prophecy fulfilled. A startled man holding a candle remarks, “He be a Mortal rum looking Angel!”, while a woman peers from the doorway and a cat watches from a wall. ‘The Set-down’. The fat woman, in stays, petticoat and nightcap, kneels in a country lane as the man on the ass rides away, telling her that another heavenly messenger will soon arrive. An owl approaches, calling “Hoo Noo Noo ooo”. Frightened and alone, she begins to suspect Johanna is an impostor and wishes she were home. The Return to Reason’. The woman begs her husband to let her in, but he insists she has already gone to heaven on one of Johanna’s spiritual donkeys. Their child calls for “Mummy”, while the man from the first scene tests the woman with a pitchfork, declaring, “I'll soon knaw if it be flesh and blood Measter!!” His wife intervenes, concluding that Johanna has cheated her, and adds that their boy shall not be named Shilah John.
