Bust portrait of James Bradley (bap. 1692- d.1762), once described by Sir Isaac Newton as the best astronomer in Europe. Bradley was Savilian professor of astronomy at the University of Oxford (from 1721) and astronomer royal (from 1742). Although he published little, Bradley's discoveries of aberration and nutation marked important astronomical advances. Engraved from a portrait by Thomas Hudson in the collection of the Royal Society.

His right elbow rests on the arm of the chair, with his hand raised to his temple. He created the spinning mule in 1779.

A half-length portrait of Quaker Dr John Fothergill FRS (1712-80), one hand inside his jacket. Fothergill was a physician, plant collector and philanthropist based in London. A great friend of Benjamin Franklin, he helped to advance the interests of the Pennsylvania Hospital in England. In 1762 he sent anatomical drawings and anatomical casts of a pregnant woman to the hospital, which were greatly admired by medical students and the public, in addition to donating the first book to the hospital library. Franklin said of him: 'I can hardly concieve that a better man ever existed'.

Portrait of Sir Henry Halford, 1st Baronet (1766–1844), three-quarter length, seated in an armchair turned to the right and facing the viewer. He holds papers on a table with his left hand and wears dark clothing with a light neckerchief, a star, a ring on his right little finger, and a seal on his fob. An ornate cloak rests on the chair, with a curtain above and a landscape in the background. Halford, born Henry Vaughan, was a prominent physician and president of the Royal College of Physicians for 24 years. He served as physician to King George III and subsequently to George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria, as well as other members of the royal family.

A three quarter portrait of Count Jean Armand de Lestocq (1692-1767), in an elaborately-embroidered coast and undercoat. A French physician, Lestocq travelled to St Petersburg, becoming a court physician. He helped Peter the Great's daughter Elizaveta Petrovna seize power in a coup in 1741, then took money from the French to influence policy. Accused of plotting against Elizaveta, Lestocq was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death, although that was commuted to internal exile. After her death, Lestocq's estates were returned to him.

An engraving of Sir Francis Chantrey's bust of civil engineer John Rennie (1761-1821), set in an arched alcove, now in the National Portrait Gallery. Rennie is most famous for his Waterloo Bridge (1811-7). Chantrey (1781-1841) was the leading portrait sculptor in Regency England, His subjects included George III (now in the Guildhall), George IV (equestrian statue in Trafalgar Square) and George Washington (Massachusetts State House).

Scarce mezzotint, proof before letters, 18th century watermark. 350 x 245mm (13¾ x 9½"). Trimmed to image on three sides, repaired tears, creases, name in old ink.
A half-length portrait in oval of Irish military engineeer Michael Richards (1673-1721), in white wig and armour. He was commissioned in 1692 (although he may have seen earlier service in the Williamite War in Ireland) and served in Flanders in the Nine Years War. He accompanied an expedition to Newfoundland in 1697. He played a role in rebuilding the town of St. John's which had been destroyed in a French attack. A protégé of the Duke of Marlbrough, he was appointed as Chief Engineer of Great Britain in 1711 and Surveyor-General of the Ordnance in 1714. He oversaw the building of the Woolwich Royal Brass Foundry (1716-7), possibly designing it himself.

Profile portrait in oval of Scottish physicist and mathematician John Robison (1739-1805). Although Robison worked with James Watt on an early steam car, he did not contribute to the successful Watt steam engine of 1776. He did invent the siren and was a member of the Board of Longitude, testing John Harrison's marine chronometer on a voyage to Jamaica. Later in life he became a conspiracy theorist, publishing ''Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe, carried on in the secret meetings of Freemasons, Illuminati and Reading Societies''.
