A three-quarter portrait of Mirza Abu Taleb Khan (1752-1806), born in India of a Persian father, a tax-collector for the East India Company. In 1799 he travelled to England, where he was known as the 'Persian Prince'. He wrote an account of his travels in Farsi, 'Masir Talib fi Bilad Afranji', published c.1805; this portrait was the frontispiece to the first English edition, 'Travels of Mirza Abu Taleb Khan in Asia, Africa and Europe'.

The title page of Emily Eden's 'Portraits of the Princes & Peoples of India', containing a seated portrait of Ali Bahadur II (1832-73), who became the ruler of Banda but was deposed by the British after he joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The Hon. Emily Eden, the seventh daughter of William Eden, first baron Auckland, accompanied her brother, George, Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India, where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. A highly gifted amateur artist and writer, Eden recorded her observations of life in India during this period in the form of letters and an extensive collection of sketches. On her return to England in 1842, Eden arranged to have her images printed privately as a portfolio of 24 lithographs.

A view of deer hunting with hounds in the grounds of Bothal Castle on the River Wansbeck, but essentially an equestrian portrait of William Cavendish (1593-1676), 1st Duke of Newcastle, in armour, baton in hand, horse rearing on a plinth, surrounded by cherubs and military trophies. After the Royalist defeat in the Civil War, Cavendish settled in Antwerp, where his treatise on horsemanship, 'La Methode et Invention nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux', including this plate, was published by Jacob van Meurs c.1657. The first English edition, 'A General System of Horsemanship in All Its Branches', was not published until 1743.

Eng and Chang Bunker (1811-1874), conjoined Siamese twins, shown here with chess and badminton equipment. When the boys were 17, they joined the Scottish merchant Robert Hunter, who managed a tour in which they displayed themselves, and were examined by doctors across the United States and Europe. In 1832 they realised that their new manager, Captain Coffin, was taking most of their profits, and made a separate arrangement with the circus owner Phineas T Barnum, with whom they toured until 1839.

When the boys were 17, they joined the Scottish merchant Robert Hunter, who managed a tour in which they displayed themselves, and were examined by doctors across the United States and Europe. In 1832 they realised that their new manager, Captain Coffin, was taking most of their profits, and made a separate arrangement with the circus owner Phineas T Barnum, with whom they toured until 1839.

From that time until 6 July 1858 he continued at the Egyptian Hall his career of success as a public entertainer, giving various new sketches of character and illustrations by William Beverley, but always keeping Mont Blanc as the central point of attraction. On 24 Aug. 1854 he gave his performance before the queen and the prince consort at Osborne House. This shows Smith at Chamonix.
