William Adlam (1750-1823) served in the American War of Independence as a Captain in the 40th Regiment (the 2nd Somersetshire) of Foot. He then served with Nelson at the battles of Copenhagen, Ushant and Nile, and was aboard the Victory at Trafalgar. A keen artist, he drew and engraved a portrait of Voltaire in 1780 as well as naval scenes such as this.

On the 28th February 1825, during a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay, a spirit cask that had come loose in the hold ruptured over a candle and exploded. After flooding the lower decks failed to extinguish the fire they managed to attract the Cambria, which took on board 554 of the passengers & crew, most soldiers and camp followers from the 31st Regiment, returning them to England. The Kent eventually exploded, but 14 men survived, to be picked up by another ship.

After he was killed in the Zulu Wars in 1879, the ship also returned the body of Louis-Napoléon, Prince Imperial, the only child of Napoleon III, to England. After the Second Afghan War in 1880, Orontes brought those soldiers back from Bombay, including (fictionally) Arthur Conan Doyle's Dr. Watson (A Study in Scarlet). He wears furs, with ice floes, ships, a sledge, and a pack of dogs visible in the background. As an Arctic explorer, Penny led the first maritime search for the ships of Sir John Franklin. In 1840, he also established the first whaling station in the Cumberland Sound area, on Kekerten Island.
