A bust portrait of James Ochoncar Forbes, 17th Lord Forbes (1765-1843), in uniform with a tartan cloak. Joining the Coldstream Guards as an ensign in 1781, he fought throughout the Napoleonic Wars, ending his career as a general. He also served as High Commissioner to the General Assembly of Scotland. He commissioned the building of the present Castle Forbes in 1815.

Arlecchino painting the portrait of a woman, holding a paint brush and a very large pot. The result is caricatured, giving her a beard. One of a famous series of 'Harlequinades' depicting characters from Commedia dell'Arte by Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692-1768). A version of this scene was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi while he was still in Italy (BM 1891,0511.54).
