The title page of Emily Eden's 'Portraits of the Princes & Peoples of India', containing a seated portrait of Ali Bahadur II (1832-73), who became the ruler of Banda but was deposed by the British after he joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The Hon. Emily Eden, the seventh daughter of William Eden, first baron Auckland, accompanied her brother, George, Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India, where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. A highly gifted amateur artist and writer, Eden recorded her observations of life in India during this period in the form of letters and an extensive collection of sketches. On her return to England in 1842, Eden arranged to have her images printed privately as a portfolio of 24 lithographs.

A comic song about a sow trying to teach her piglets to 'umph' like an adult, rather than 'wee'. Alfred Scott-Gatty (1847-1918) was an officer of arms at the College of Arms and an amateur yet popular composer. His younger brother, Stephen Herbert Gatty (1849-1922, owner of this music book, was a barrister who served as Chief Justice of Gibraltar from 1895 to 1905, and was the father-in-law of Siegfried Sassoon.
